Douglas Riley Obituary

ALTONA — Douglas "Red" Riley, 85, of Devils Den Road, Altona passed away Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at his home with his family by his side.

He was born in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada, Jan. 31, 1924, the son of William and Flossy (Lashway) Riley.

Red drove truck for the Plattsburgh Quarries in Plattsburgh, retiring after 28 years of service. He was a member of the Teamster Local 648. Red enjoyed watching NASCAR on Sunday afternoons and loved making apple pies. Red would get up every morning to drive to meet his friends for coffee at McDonalds in Champlain. He was always willing to offer his "two cents" worth on everything; and his favorite saying was "son of a b****," which he could be heard saying quite often.

Red was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn M. Riley; a daughter, Geraldine Darrah; his parents; his brothers, Gerald, Pat, Jimmy; and a sister, Eileen Loftus.

He is survived by a daughter, Joan Deyo, and her husband, Chandler of Altona; and a son, Francis Veivia, and his wife, Sandra of Evans Mills; 14 grandchildren, Amanda Gilmore and her husband, Paul, Tony Deyo and his wife, Sheila, Patty Matthews and her husband, Jim, Jimmy Sayah, Debbie Matthews, Douglas Veivia and his wife, Amy, Laurie Shaw and her husband, Louis, Betty Lobdell, Deena Wrisley and her husband, Ken, Brenda Schultz and her husband, Bob, Paul Sayah and his wife, Jodi, Tom Veivia and his wife, Amy, Mary Snide and her husband, Joey and Carol Boulrice and her husband, Greg; 35 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Blanche Furnia, and her husband, Lester of Auburn, N.Y.; and special friends, Ceceil Roberts and Leon and Mona Lancto.

Calling hours were held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Brown Funeral Home in Altona. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at Holy Angels Church in Altona. Burial will take place next year in Holy Angels Cemetery.

Donations in "Red's" memory may be made to the Altona Youth Commission or Altona Rescue Squad.

RED'S FAMILY ,
I SURE WILL MISS THE FRIENDSHIP OF RED . HE WAS SUCH A FRIENDLY PERSON . YOUR MOM AND HE USE TO MEET US AT MCDONALDS TO HAVE A COFFEE AND VISIT FOR A COUPLE HOURS EVERY MORNING . WE ALL LOOKED FORWARD TO THAT . THEN YOUR MOM WAS CALLED TO HEAVEN AND RED CONTINUED THE VISITS UNTIL HE BECAME VERY SICK A COUPLE YEARS AGO . THEN YOU ALL TOOK SUCH GOOD CARE OF HIM WHEN HE HAD A BAD HEALTH PROBLEM . THANKS TO ALL YOUR SPECIAL FAMILY , RED WAS ABLE TO STAY WITH US FOR A COUPLE MORE YEARS . HE LOVED ALL OF YOU VERY MUCH . HE WAS ALWAYS PROUD TO TELL ME ALL YOU DID FOR HIM . YOU ARE ALL SUPER PEOPLE .YOU NOW HAVE TWO SPECIAL ANGELS TO WATCH OVER YOU . AS ONE OF RED'S SPECIAL FRIENDS , I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANKS FOR BEING THERE FOR HIM . WITHOUT YOUR SPECIAL CARE , HE WOULD HAVE LEFT US TWO YEARS AGO . WE CERTAINLY WILL MISS HIM . GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU .
