I first had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Rhone in 1980 during my M2 year of med school. Dr. Rhone was director of the pathology program at Illinois Masonic Hospital and I was one of his med students. I was unsure of what field of medicine to pursue and had numerous discussions about my options. Needless to say, I decided to pursue anatomical and clinical pathology. I learned more medicine and pathology from Dr. Rhone than I learned from the remainder of my professors in M3 and M4 years. Thanks to his guidance, I did my residency at UCLA and began private practice in Torrance, California. Forty years later I still remember the pearls of wisdom he shared with me. He was a prince of a man and a scholar second to none. I sincerely hope we meet again.

Over the past 10 years, I have had occasion to do some professional photography for Doug. Granddaughter Kaitlyn at age 3, a wedding reception for Todd and Stacey, and then portraits of Kaitlyn and young TJ in 2009. I last spoke with Doug in the summer of 2011 when he was planning a fall portrait of the kids. When we spoke some weeks later, he was not well, and I was concerned for him. We never did that portrait.

I had tried to contact him this past spring, and got no answer. I have known in my heart for some time that he passed away, but tonight, for some reason, I felt compelled to search for an answer. I am sad to see I was right.

Seldom have I met a man more compassionate and devoted to his family. I enjoyed our conversations, visiting his beautiful home on Spring Avenue, and his honest and caring nature. It was a privilege to create find portraits for him and his family to enjoy, and I am grateful to have the chance to express my condolences to his family. I miss him, too.

I was so saddened to hear of Doug's illness, and now of his loss. He and I started at Masonic the same year, and he was always one of my favorite people. He was kind, meticulous, responsible, and had an utterly delightful sense of humor. In a group situation, he was the one whose raised eyebrow you looked for when any silliness arose; he never disappointed. He ran a great department; trained a generation of outstanding successors; and will be greatly missed.
My deepest sympathy to his family on their loss.

Todd, Jenny and Kaitlyn:
Lori and I are saddened by the sudden passing of Douglas. We will always remember him fondly for the good times we spent together in Chicago, Detroit, Kiawah and Mexico. As good friends, we shared deep memories of events and places that will not be forgotten. Douglas was kind, articulate and funny. He was extremely cultured and a joy to discuss with opera, classical music and antiques. There were no two persons like him. We will miss him terribly. God has him in His Glory!

Graduated w/ Doug from St. Procopius College in '65. Doug was also the "infirmary guy" during my time there. Got really sick senior year and was bedridden. Doug would visit my room regulary to make sure I was taking my medication, and check to see if I was still alive! Remember a very caring guy. I am saddened by his loss, but know that Doug would have led a good life and positively touched many other lives. My sympathies to his family.

To the Rhone Family my deepest condolences. Dr. Rhone was my teacher, my mentor, my first medical director, the first blood donor I ever drew (pretty scary to draw your teacher), my first apheresis donor, my first frozen blood unit. We worked together for 35 years sharing professional goals and family anecdotes. My daughter Anna was born smack dab between Jenny & Todd. Dr. Rhone set high standards for himself and all of those around him. His legacy is his memorial. Long after his passing, his impact on the practice of laboratory medicine will make this world a safer place for patients. I can almost see his grimace at all of this "effusia", but I wanted you to be assured of the love and deep admiration that he instilled in those around huim, My prayers are with you all.

My condolences to the family of Dr. Rhone. I have known him and worked with him since he was an intern at Illinois Masonic Hospital. Eventually, he became my boss and what a great and caring person he was. He made the whole laboratory feel like one big family. Even after his retirement he was not forgotten and I thank him for the good memories at IMMC.
