Doris Hoskins Obituary

Hoskins, Doris M. 1925-2007 Doris May Hoskins of Wilmette passed away July 4th following a heart attack. Born April 8, 1925 in Oak Park, she was a graduate of Austin High School, Northwestern University and the Evanston Hospital School of Nursing. Doris was an avid culinary artisan, bridge player, bowler and motorcyclist. For many years, using her medical background as an R.N., she worked as a school nurse at New Trier High School in Winnetka, and when the West Campus of New Trier opened, transferred to that school, ultimately returning to the East school when West closed.Doris was a devoted mother of four who leaves her husband of 59 years of marriage, Robert, son Craig (Anne) (both deceased), sons Arthur (Sarah) and Richard, and daughter Sally, plus two grandchildren, Clea Rose and Emma Reynolds. As a world traveler, she had visited locations, some remote, in 59 countries, and sailed on nine of the seas and oceans. A memorial service celebrating the life of Doris will be held at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Wilmette, 1024 Lake Avenue, on Thursday, July 12 at 11:00 A.M.

Dear Bob and Family: I loved Dorie and her outgoing ways. She's a role model. She truly made me feel welcomed to the Trinity Methodist Church and the Book Club. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about her joys of travel and love of her family. She was energetic and fully embraced life right to the end. I'll truly miss her. All of you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am so sorry to learn of this loss and my prayers go out to the family. I remember Dori from New Trier working with my mother in the nurses office. The office was a friendly place to go if you were sick, or just needed reassurance to get thru the day. I am now a school nurse and I try and run our office the same way. School nurses do not just give pills, bandaids, and hugs... those are only a small part of what Dori understood so well.

Scores of New Trier High School students and teachers remember Dori with great fondness through her work as a school nurse for more than two decades. Her gentle spirit and great kindness were always reassuring and helpful in both large and small matters. Dori touched so many lives in so many positive ways. Her colleagues will cherish her memory and mourn her passing. Jim Marran, TARP
