Sarah Kunka

November 11, 2016

Hi. I am sarah kunka

I met Don in 1972 after I started going out with my husband Len. Or Lenny as some called him. Don, Len and I would go to Blackhawk games and Cub Games. We bowled on the same night. Don, Len, my Dad, Tom, and Bob were on the men's side and Don got me on a team on the ladies side. We had fun after bowling too. Sometimes a little too much fun.
Len and I would always stop at Burger King to see , Don, where he worked part time in the evenings. I always teased him about the fact that he would not eat pizza when we meet. He learned to like it. Especially my pizza!!!!!
Len called Don, Hamhock. Don called Len Bunkie. Once my sister asked Len ". How is lamb chop?" Len said "Not lamb chop ...Hamhock" .

Don was in our wedding. He attended the christening of our daughters, came to birthday parties, New years parties and backyard get togethers, and of course his famous 4th of July party, that started on 51st street. He, his Dad and brothers loved fireworks. Lois, his mom, not so much.

One day he called Len and told him he was dating a girl from work. We were so excited. We met Cathy at our house when he brought her over for a birthday party (I think it was a birthday party). They soon got married and Len and I were in their wedding.

We soon found ourselves in the mist of raising our kids. Don was always coaching Donnie in sports. Len would go watch Donnie and once in a while I would go because I was promised pizza after. We got together at Christmas for sure and whenever we could during the year. Cubs and Hawk games were always on the calendar for them. Playing pick up hockey games in the middle of the night as well as in the middle of snow storms were the norm. That was in the younger years.

They years went by so fast.

Don was always there to help , and when Len got sick Don was with him in his final hours. They had met when they were about 4 years old and never had a bad day together. Unless we consider the camping trip we went on when it rained. Well, never mind. We all knew it was Donnie's fault.

Last week the Cubs finally made Chicago a proud and happy city. Don and I were texting back and forth through the last 2 games. I wanted that win for Donnie more than anything. I was so happy he finally got to see his beloved Cubs victorious.

Life will never be the same for any of us, with out Don. He was the nicest person I know and would help anyone in any way for any reason. He would always go out of his way for anyone he knew. He was a very hard worker. He loved Cathy and all of his kids to the moon and back. The world has lost a man who was loved by so many. I know that Len was there to meet his soul when he passed from this earth,

Bye Don. I love you.
