Delle Chatman Obituary

Chatman, Delle Aloia left this world for the next on Tuesday, November 7, 2006. She was 54 years old. She had been a tenacious, spirit-filled cancer warrior for four years, and loved to say to her sisters in the ovarian cancer struggle, "One day there will be a cure worthy of us!" Alas, not yet. She taught writing; first at Northwestern University, then at DePaul University, in Chicago, IL. She also taught for Act One, Inc., an organization devoted to giving Christian writers, in particular, the tools to write meaningful, well-crafted screenplays. She wrote in Hollywood for many years, and cherished most an assignment as screenwriter for the award winning Showtime film, "FREE OF EDEN." She also created an African American cowboy for the ABC series, "The Young Riders." Delle's published works include "The Unteachable Ten," and "Death of a Parent", co- authored by Rev. William Kenneally. "The Prayer Warriors of St. Gertrude ", "Shake the Dust" and "Dear Faith Folk" were created to broaden her heart's reach even further on the Internet. She was most sorry to leave her daughter, the Remarkable Ramona, for whom she tried to remain on earth as long as possible. Her brothers Gregory, Christopher, and James Jr. and nephews Sean and James were very dear to her too. She had devoted friends anchored at her daughter's school, Sacred Heart School and at her parish, St. Gertrude Catholic Church, where she often climbed the pulpit stairs to preside or preach, especially on Good Friday. Her television ministry included co-hosting WTTW's "30 Good Minutes." She's survived by all of the above, along with her aunt Lassie Sellers, who along with her grandmother Aloia Adams, her parents Joyce and James Chatman, now deceased, and propelled her out of fourteen years of agnosticism. She also leaves behind her beloved cat Hope (they saved each other) and Faith, the cat who saved Ramona. Her remains will be cremated. In lieu of flowers, Delle asked that you spend quality time with Ramona. The Celebration of Delle Chatman's Life and Home-Going Mass will be held at St. Gertrude Catholic Church, 1420 W. Granville Ave. Chicago, IL on Saturday, November 11, at 2:00 p.m. For additional information call Barr Funeral Home (773) 743-4034 or sign the guestbook at BarrFuneralHome.com.

Although I never recieved the chance to meet Delle Aloia Chatman herself, I was blessed with the presence of her daughter, Ramona, at Harand Theatre Camp this summer. I offer my help and blessing to the family.

Dear Delle, Though we only knew you briefly and because you sent your beautiful daughter to Harand Camp, you glowed warmth, strength and love when you entered the room. We would love to spend more time with Ramona. Please let us know how to reach her

Love,
The Harand Family

Delle is an incredible light that will continue to show me how to live a God-centered life rather than the meek life that was my path. Delle makes evangelization as natural as the sun rise.

I just learned of Delle's passing tonight after watching 30 Good Minutes. Though my only experience of her was through seeing her on that program, I feel I have lost a dear friend. I thank God for the gift of Delle Chatman and offer my deepest sympathy to her family.

Delle was my screenwriting teacher at Northwestern University in 1995. We became friends. She invited me to her home, fed me lunch, and I marveled that someone could put an easy chair in the kitchen. My daughter, Sarah, and Ramona played together while we talked about this and that--writing, parenting our young daughters, the majestic view of the Lake from her high-rise window. I will never forget her because she shared herself so generously, so easily. We didn't stay in contact for a long time, but I thought of her often. I once saw her walking down Sheridan Road in the gloam of a winter day, and nearly swerved off the road. I said to myself, "Oh my gosh, there's Delle." She didn't see me, but I still felt a surge of good energy. Ironically, I taught at St. Gertrude's School in the 1980's before Delle became a parishioner there. That also made me feel connected to her in a special way. She was a great woman and her passing is a huge loss. I feel grateful to have known her and sorry that she had to leave so early.

Your writings were truly an inspiration, and to this cancer survivor, I now have replaced those words with cancer warrior. Please say hello to my mom, Mary Kerr, another ovarian cancer warrior, who left this earth on March 28. We love you Delle!

What a brilliant star you were. Like so many of your students, the lessons you taught continue to guide me even today. Enjoy the company of those fierce woman warriors who welcomed you home.
