Delle Chatman Obituary

Although I never recieved the chance to meet Delle Aloia Chatman herself, I was blessed with the presence of her daughter, Ramona, at Harand Theatre Camp this summer. I offer my help and blessing to the family.

Delle is an incredible light that will continue to show me how to live a God-centered life rather than the meek life that was my path. Delle makes evangelization as natural as the sun rise.

I just learned of Delle's passing tonight after watching 30 Good Minutes. Though my only experience of her was through seeing her on that program, I feel I have lost a dear friend. I thank God for the gift of Delle Chatman and offer my deepest sympathy to her family.

I remember her on 30 Good Minutes. She touched my soul.

Delle was my screenwriting teacher at Northwestern University in 1995. We became friends. She invited me to her home, fed me lunch, and I marveled that someone could put an easy chair in the kitchen. My daughter, Sarah, and Ramona played together while we talked about this and that--writing, parenting our young daughters, the majestic view of the Lake from her high-rise window. I will never forget her because she shared herself so generously, so easily. We didn't stay in contact for a long time, but I thought of her often. I once saw her walking down Sheridan Road in the gloam of a winter day, and nearly swerved off the road. I said to myself, "Oh my gosh, there's Delle." She didn't see me, but I still felt a surge of good energy. Ironically, I taught at St. Gertrude's School in the 1980's before Delle became a parishioner there. That also made me feel connected to her in a special way. She was a great woman and her passing is a huge loss. I feel grateful to have known her and sorry that she had to leave so early.

You will always be in my heart. What an honor it was to have known you. You are a shinning star.

Your writings were truly an inspiration, and to this cancer survivor, I now have replaced those words with cancer warrior. Please say hello to my mom, Mary Kerr, another ovarian cancer warrior, who left this earth on March 28. We love you Delle!

Our prayers are with you and your family. Your spirit and guidance will be missed.

What a brilliant star you were. Like so many of your students, the lessons you taught continue to guide me even today. Enjoy the company of those fierce woman warriors who welcomed you home.
