Delia Metzger Obituary

Metzger, Delia M. (nee Schroepfer), age 89. Late of St. John IN., formerly of Chicago, IL. Passed away Tuesday, January 25, 2011 surrounded by her family. Beloved wife of the late Raymond A. Metzger for 67 years. Loving mother of Karen (John) McKenna, Elizabeth (Phillip) Carr, Stephen Metzger, Mary (Don) Nielsen, Raymond (Laura) Metzger, Edward (Carol) Metzger, Tony (Pam) Metzger, and Sally (Matthew) Kerns. Devoted grandmother of 23; cherished great-grandmother of 15; fond aunt of many nieces and nephews and friend to many. Member of the West Lawn Seniors Bowling League and the Little Flower Altar and Rosary Society. Former CCD teacher at Queen of the Universe and St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parishes in Chicago. Inspired by her devotion to St. Therese of the Little Flower, she lived with unshakeable confidence in God's love. She believed that each day was a gift and that in life, small acts performed with great love matter most. A Memorial Mass for Delia and her devoted husband, Raymond, will be held Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 10:00 am in the Day Chapel of St. John the Evangelist Parish, 9330 Wicker Avenue, St. John, IN 46373 (Intersection of Rt. 41 & 93rd Avenue). Our hearts go out to the Metzger Clan, Tony, Pam, Craig and Michelle, our neighbors and friends, and to all the brothers and sisters and grandchildren of Ray and Delia.

Sitting in Tony and Pam's house, drinking coffee, and sharing dumb jokes with Ray and Delia was the best. Ray's sense of humor and Delia's smile and kindness will always be remembered. Both myself and mom, are praying for Ray and Delia, and for the family. They will be missed.

Love, Louise and Char

So sad to hear about "Gram and Big Daddy." They were both so much a part of my life growing up...their generous spirit and caring ways will always be remembered.

My prays to Tony, Pam and the entire Metzger family. You all have a special place in my heart.

With deepest sympathy on behalf of the George & Shirley Koske family and the Ed & Marie Provost family. I'm sure all our parents are now reminiscing the "good ol' days of pinochle and Pell Lake".

To All the Metzger Clan --

Wow -- such intense love between your Mom and Dad, that they should leave this world so close together. No surprise there, though. . .

What a privilege to have known your Mom for all these years! She was truly a model mother, wife, neighbor and friend. I just know that Mom, Dad, Millie, Nana and Andy were all there, along with your Dad, to welcome her home.

I am so sorry that I cannot make it to Chicago for the memorial service. But I will surely be with you in spirit.

Once again, my warmest aloha to you all.

Dear Mary and family,

You remain always in our thoughts and prayers.

We are Blessed to have known two such wonderful people who gave the world so many beautiful people to share our lives with.

Our deepest sympathy to all of you.

The road ahead will bring you so many cherished memories...hold them deeply in your hearts and know Mom and Dad will be with you as we all continue in our journey here on earth.

We will all look forward to being reunited with all of our loved ones.

I think my Mom and Dad may finally be meeting your Mom and Dad...perhaps they are playing a game of cards together.

We love you

So many great memories of Mom . . . it's hard to decide where to start. She loved intensely. She served her family and neighbors tirelessly. She always wanted to be the best person she could be, and she wanted the best for those around her. I remember the smell of bread baking on cold, snowy winter afternoons, catching her doing laundry in the basement at 4 am, hearing her singing as she folded laundry or prepared a meal, and laughter - so much laughter - even in difficult times. Though she had plenty to keep her busy with our own large family, she found time to help neighbors and friends.

What a wonderful woman! She will be missed, but her character lives on in us, her kids, grand-kids, in-laws, outlaws, extended family and friends. She helped shape us all.

My deepest sympathy to all of the Metzger family. Both of your parents were delightful to talk to at the family gatherings. Such a loving couple. That love shows through the entire family.
I am sure that your Dad went ahead as to make sure everything was ok for his lovely bride. They are probably hand in hand watching over you all.
I will miss seeing and talking to them. Love, Kristie

How many women do you know that would get excited about their mother-in-law coming over? Well I did! Who better then her would know how much work it is to raise a family. She would come at least once a week to sweep my floor or bring a meal and help me fold laundry. She would never criticize, always encouraging. I learned so much over that folded laundry!! She sacrificed so others could have. And never, never complained. Mom and dad didn’t just tell you about the love of Christ they lived it! They made each child, grandchild and great-grandchild feel like they were the most important person in the world, only because to them we were! Their legacy lives on in all of us. How blessed to be a part of this family!
