David Spagat Obituary

Spagat, David David Spagat, 86, of Oak Park, beloved husband of 56 years to Patricia; loving father of Susan (David) Moore, Michael (Hsiao-Rei) and Robert (Toni); enthusiastic grandfather of Daniel, Olivia, Isabella, Lucas and Henry; devoted brother of Mark and the late William. There are also many nieces, nephews and their families, as well as friends who feel this loss. A veteran of WWII, and a truly unique character who loved his family above all. He was an attorney and a commodities trader at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. He led a full and active life of volunteer work, walking his rescued dog Paula (even last week), riding his bicycle, attending concerts and cultural events. He loved photography and nature, and spent most of his time with his wife and life-long friend Patricia. He was a generous man who supported many charities, especially his favorite causes of animals and the environment. He held many heart-felt opinions that he was happy to discuss with anyone. He has helped countless people and animals, and will continue to do so by donating his body to the Biological Resource Center of Illinois. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to PAWS Adoption and Humane Center; 1997 N. Clybourn; Chicago, IL 60614. There will be a Memorial Visitation with the family held on Monday, May 9th between 3:00-9:00 p.m. at the Oak Park Conservatory, 615 Garfield St.; Oak Park. Information 708-386-8637.

Not sure what to say?

The real question for me now, is what would David like others to say about him? For example, how kind and caring he was, and his sense of humor and adventure kept him young and vibrant. When we went on a canoeing/camping trip in Michigan, I knew my outdoor adventures from that moment on would pale in comparison to the drama we experienced. Always one to figure it out as he went, it was amazing really. Love to all the Spagat family. You have each touched my heart. All of you.

I was very sad to learn of David Spagat's passing. Dave, as we knew him when he came to England as a soldier during the war, was most amusing, kind and generous to all us kids, who were so excited to have found an American cousin. I was sorry not to have gotten to know him better in later years.
