David Shapiro Obituary

Shapiro, David Charles 57, Chicago, IL. David was born in East Orange and was raised in Union, New Jersey. David moved to Chicago in 1987 and met Wendy shortly thereafter, where they were next door neighbors. David woke up one morning to the sounds of the band Little Feet blasting through the walls. He knocked on his neighbor's door at 5:00 a.m. and said "I like Little Feet but could you play it in the evening"? That was the beginning of David and Wendy's 25 year relationship. In addition to loving Wendy, David loved racing cars, watching car races and was fascinated by anything with an engine. When not racing cars he was riding his bicycle or running. His boyhood dream of racing cars was realized during his 10 year membership in the SCCA Racing Spec Racers. He will be missed by his friends in the racing community. Beloved son of the late Leonard Shapiro; loving husband of Wendy Berger Shapiro; brother of Monica Shapiro, New York; brother-in-law to (late) Jeffrey A. Berger and Jennifer Berger, Barbara Berger Maes and Luc Maes and Erica Berger; beloved son-in-law of Diane Siegman; loving uncle to Sophie Maes, Julien Maes, Garrett Mehok, Jack Berger and Reid Berger; dearest longtime friend of Ross Bernstein, Steve, Amy and Zoe Berman. He graduated from Muhlenberg College and received his MBA from Lehigh University. David was Executive Director and Head of Midwest Restructuring at Capstone Advisory Group LLC. He was a financial whiz with a long career in banking and finance. He was also known for his intelligence and dry sense of humor. The Funeral will be held at Anshe Emet Synagogue, 3751 North Broadway Avenue, Chicago, IL at 1:00 p.m. this Sunday, February 8, 2015. Contributions should be made to the Jewish Federation Jeffrey A. Berger Memorial Fund, 30 S. Wells Street, Suite 3054, Chicago, IL 60606 or JUF.org.

So very saddened to hear of David's passing just last evening at our Union (NJ) High School 40th reunion. David was a graduate of the class of 1976 and a classmate of mine since grammer school at Washington School in Union, NJ. We were in 5th grade together. Always a nice person. May he rest in peace. My condolences to his loved ones.

Wendy:

David and I shared a profession and a love of driving fast. Thanks so much for our discussion yesterday. And whenever I exit the Kink at Road America I'll give David a 'point by' because he was way faster and smarter about so many things.

David was one of my all time favorite people and dearest friends. I will miss him tremendously. Since meeting at ABN Amro 20 years ago, we became fast friends. He was perceptive, witty, articulate, and extremely intelligent. He knew what you were thinking before you did, but he would not let on (which I appreciated). David was also the best listener I have ever known.

When called upon, David would enthusiastically provide insightful advice on numerous subjects including finance, cars, cycling, running shoes, and even shaving cream. I will forever miss his great advice, wry smile, and charming delivery.

While I miss my good friend, I take solace in the years of fond memories, and the knowledge that heaven just became a more fun and interesting place to get to.

Wendy and family.... I, too, knew David since Washington School thru Union High. I am so sad to say we have lost a few friends in the past few months way, way too soon. I hope all of your happy memories get you through these tough times.

David was on my "Board of Directors", a seat that no other person can fill. He was a mentor, friend, confidant, political ally, and fellow gearhead. He taught me eloquence, thoughtfulness, life priorities and the love of hot wings with MGD. He left this world a far better place by those he touched and cared about deeply.

Sorry to hear about Dave. I remember running around with him in his gold Super Beetle in high school. I got to visit with him briefly about 10 years ago while passing through Chicago.

I hadn't seen David since high school but we went through school together since First Grade in Washington School. When I look at our class pictures, I can still hear his laugh. So very sad to hear of his passing and so very sorry to hear of your loss.

I am so sorry to hear of David's passing. David and I were in different offices – I am in DC, but we did spend some quality time together in Las Vegas a couple of years ago. During our time together, he was always enthusiastic and supportive. He was a great companion for an event like that and we really enjoyed palling around while doing the drudgery of a large conference. I have heard similar sentiments from others of my colleagues and lawyers, clients and competitors who all enjoyed working with David.
David will continue to be in my prayers and he will join a number of friends (the most memorable among us) who have passed on before their time.

DAVID WAS AN AMAZING MAN! His passing has left an incredible void in many lives. In my life a scarred and saddened heart. He was a brother, a friend, a confidant... A listener. His love and compassion was felt by all that knew him, our hours of dialogue and banter never to be forgotten.

Wendy, we did not know each other but I knew David well. Rob McMahon introduced us and we became friends because our careers and our approach to things was amazingly similar. I tried to hire him while I was at GE and would have loved to work with him. There are no words other than I am sorry for your loss. We lost a friend and you lost a soulmate and I cannot imagine the pain. Please try to remember all the good times. He will be missed by so many people and will always be in our hearts. Jeff Fitts
