I was saddened to hear the news of Father O's passing. My family moved away from the neighborhood of OLH when I was in 3rd grade, but my mom was still a part of the Women's group, which I tagged along a couple of times with her. He would stop by for coffee and conversation. He was a good soul and will be sorely missed. May God bless his family, friends and those that have fond memories of him in this difficult time.

I met Father O'Sullivan at church on Sunday many years ago. I am from Kansas City, Missouri and a group of us attend one Notre Dame football game a year. We stay at Olymply Fields CC. We usually go to church before we return home on Sunday. I graduated from St. Irenaeus in 1956.
I was very sorry to hear of his death. I had just sent a contribution to the church and he had someone from the parish call me before he died.

Father O'Sullivan was a great comfort to me when my brother Steve died and I will sorely miss him. He was an inspiration to me on many occasions. I will always remember his joyous energy at midnight mass.
Goodbye Father
May God hold you in the palm of his hand!

Dear Jerry and Neil,
I just heard today of Dan's passing from my sister Helen and we talked for an hour recalling all the great times with Father O. He shared so much with us, from vacations to laughter and even tears. He even taught Helen's daugher Anne to drive, no easy feat I might say. The last time we talked I was sure he was beating this and he was so upbeat as usual. I shall never forget him and am so glad he shared so many fun times with us. My love to all your family. He was truely loved and will be greatly missed.

I will miss Fr. O'Sullivan dearly. I feel as though there is a hole in my heart from his loss. We all got to know him so well through all his stories. He was a beautiful, loving, accepting person who enjoyed life and truly knew how to live a Christ - like life. He was an inspiration and model to all of us. My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving also and I love the fall colors, but I am mostly a Cubs fan. I send my condolences to his beautiful family he shared with us throughout the years in his homilies. I feel so blessed to have had him as my spiritual leader!

We were so lucky to have Father Dan celebrate all the important occassions in our lives. His stories will stay with us forever. The best story is the bread story he told at our wedding. We loved the backyard mass every year( for 35 years) with all the Quigley families. It won't be the same. He was a wonderful priest and friend.

O'Sullivan family and friends,
My deepest sympathies to you at this difficult time. I, like many, considered Fr. Dan part of my family as he baptized me, presided over my wedding, and baptized all my children. I was so happy he felt well enough to baptize the twins in May so he was able to see them, if only just once. He spent many a Sunday at our house eating ribs and drinking Old Style. I cherish those memories. He was a wonderful man who always had a smile on his face. My father put it best when he said, "Father Dan was love." I will truly miss him but know he is where he belongs - among the angels. God gave the Steinhagens a gift when they sent us Father Dan!

I was saddened and shocked to hear of Fr Dan's passing. I just got his beautiful Christmas card with the lovely Irish poem. I never knew he had cancer or was ill. I've been getting his cards and masses for 20 years since I left St Gerard Parish. He was my favorite priest ever! He made every mass special..never boring. He helped my husband and me at a time when my late husband was terminally ill. We loved to go to church because he made it special and warm. My husband was blind and he frequently picked us to bring up the gifts. We were honored! And he presided over his funeral mass..a most memorable one.
He visited us at our home and was a regular guy! We always loved talking to him. He will be so missed.
My condolences to his family.

I too would like to extend my condolences to the O'Sullivan family. Father O'Sullivan was a remarkable priest and he seems to have had the same effect on many people. Someone else wrote here that Father O'Sullivan always knew how to make him feel better when he was down on Sundays. I can only second that. May Father Dan rest in peace.

Father O'Sullivan was one of a kind! You either thought he was the greatest thing since sliced bread or not. Whenever I was back home in Park Forest at St. Irenaeus, it was a pleasure to be at 8:30 Mass on Sunday if only to hear a story about the O'Sullivan family. It will take someone with very big shoes to fill the spot left vacant by Father Dan O'Sullivan.

Father Dan, my second cousin, was an amazing man. He recently married my niece, Nicole, on Aug 8. It was a beautiful ceremony along with lovely Irish stories. The eulogy he gave for my Mother, Mary O'Keeffe Scollard, was pure magic. He helped me accept her death in a way I never thought possible. I am a better person for having known him. May he rest in peace. God Bless him always. To his brothers, Neil and Jerry, I am so sorry for your loss. We love you all.

Our prayers and condolences go out to St. Irenaeus Parish and the O'Sullivan Family. Father Dan was, at once, an exemplary, human, holy, and humorous priest. He was a fine, fine man. We are grateful for the countless times he extended himself to grieving families. May he rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon his good soul. --Bob Moynihan and Staff

I will never forget Father O'Sullivan. I was one of his beloved students and friends.
He was my pastor, teacher and
spiritual mentor at St. Ailbe's
and Our Lady of Hungary parishes.
Father meant so much to me and my family.
He was and will always be the
embodiment of God's love.
Father Daniel, rest peacefully in
the presence of our Lord.

I knew FR. Dan and his family when they lived on Monroe St. in "Res". He was still in the seminary and I was a curate at RES.
I remember meeting him a few years ago at Irish Fest in Milwaukee, he spent the whole 3 days there.
He was a hard worker; I remember him telling me about visiting his relatives in Ireland (It had to be Kerry) and going out to cut turf for the fire. That is a hard job
Fr. Dan did not always get along with authorities--he fought about the use on non-union labor on Church projests
Fr. Dan was and still in the kingdom a "Sogarth Aroon" Beloved priest.
God grant you glory, Fr. Dan and may the angels lead you into paradise

I was still in grammar school on the southside when Fr. Dan entered my life many years ago. Over the years he became "like one of the family". I will never forget his many kindnesses extended in the form of home visits, last rites, funeral Masses and weddings. No matter what was asked of him, the answer was always, "Yes". Of course, it never hurt to have a home-cooked meal (cold beer and/or good wine) ready to share. And then there were the stories . . . Thank you for being the priest that your were and a part of my life. I was hoping you could have shared in just one more Opening Day. Rest in Peace!

I remember Father O's controversial sermons. Plus, I remember how he would weave stories of his family through the homiles. If anything he held the attention of the congregation.
But, most of all, I remember his kind attention when my mother passed away and right after 10:30 mass he came to St. James Hospital to check on the situation , offer comfort, and give my mother the Last Rites.
Our family requested that Mom , like her deceased relatives ,, go out on the song "Danny Boy " from the church. Father O gave his own rendetion and I must say he did his Irish heritage, proud, with his version.
Then again, I have another memory of him and the smile on his face , after Mass , when the White Sox finally won the World Series in 2005.
I have known and worked with a few priests in my career, however, I have say Father O was the one that I thought of, when someone would mention "parish priest" in a conversation.
He has been the glue that held together St. Irenaeus and made it the "welcoming parish" that it is.

Fr. O'sullivan was a great priest and he felt like part of our family. We not only went to church at St. Irenaeus but we involved with alter servers and my parents were active also. As I got older we continued to go to church there. My husband and I were married there and Fr. O'Sullivan baptized my daugther. I will remember him not only as our priest but a good friend. You could talk to him about anything and was always willing to help. He will be greatly missed. May you rest in peace Fr. O!

We are so grateful to have had Fr. O as our pastor at St. I's. No one could tell a story like he could! Fr. O was one of the friendliest and most approachable people I've ever known. We will always remember him fondly, especially on the first cold evening of Autumn. With love,Tom,Amy&Sara Leddy
