Daniel Fegan Obituary

Fegan, Daniel Passed away at age 73 from complications from leukemia while surrounded by family on October 1. Retired after working as an English teacher for over 35 years, mostly at Harlan High School on Chicago's South side, Dan leaves behind his beloved wife, Claudia; his daughter and first-born child, Angela; his son, James; and his younger sister, Mary. Possessing a master's degree in English, Dan was a prolific writer and enjoyed composing poetry for any occasion, but mostly odes to his wife. He appreciated a good joke, loved a good story, and lived to help others, even perfect strangers. A lifelong Chicagoan, Dan loved his home, and strove for justice for the people of his city. Friends are invited to share memories of Dan at a celebration of his life which has been scheduled for October 15 at ChiSox Bar & Grill at 3:00 p.m. For details, please call 773-259-0087.

Mr. Fegan was my freshman English teacher at Harlan High School in 1977. He was the teacher that referred me to the Honor's program. I typed in his name to find him on Facebook but his obituary popped up instead: I am heartbroken. Mr. Fegan always made me feel like I was smart when I did not think so at all. I went on to attend NIU in DeKalb and graduate school. I became a Speech Pathologist and will be retiring December 1st after 33 years working in a high school in Norcross, Ga. I hate that I missed Mr. Fegan's services but most of all, I wish I could tell him Thank You for believing in a poor, African American girl and giving her confidence to be a success in life. Can't wait to welcome you back in the resurrection Mr. Fegan. You were a good man.

Mr. Fegan was one of the coolest teachers at Harlan High School. He understood the temporary fatalism of being a teenager and always encouraged me to stay positive during those challenging days. I will always remember that he saw the value in me as a person. One of my keepsakes is a poem he wrote for me back then. I will always treasure it and his friendship. My condolences to his loved ones. Harlan High Class of 1976.
