Mr. Fegan was my freshman English teacher at Harlan High School in 1977. He was the teacher that referred me to the Honor's program. I typed in his name to find him on Facebook but his obituary popped up instead: I am heartbroken. Mr. Fegan always made me feel like I was smart when I did not think so at all. I went on to attend NIU in DeKalb and graduate school. I became a Speech Pathologist and will be retiring December 1st after 33 years working in a high school in Norcross, Ga. I hate that I missed Mr. Fegan's services but most of all, I wish I could tell him Thank You for believing in a poor, African American girl and giving her confidence to be a success in life. Can't wait to welcome you back in the resurrection Mr. Fegan. You were a good man.

Mr. Fegan was one of the coolest teachers at Harlan High School. He understood the temporary fatalism of being a teenager and always encouraged me to stay positive during those challenging days. I will always remember that he saw the value in me as a person. One of my keepsakes is a poem he wrote for me back then. I will always treasure it and his friendship. My condolences to his loved ones. Harlan High Class of 1976.
