Christopher Walker Obituary

Chris still reigns as a major figure in our Vietnam era military communications work. He was not only a brilliant manager but a great friend to many. He is not forgotten.

It's been 9 years today since you passed granddad. Every year that goes by the amount that you are missed never changes...know I think of you often and I know you are always looking out for us. You are going to have another great grandchild soon. Wish you were here to meet him/her but know you wil be seeing the baby from up above.

So here it is 5 yrs since you have gone to your maker. It's Valentines Day and this day just will never be the same without here. Rush Williams will be there with his family, and he wants to just have a private get-together with us and his family to sort of celebrate. Then Laurel and I go on to San Pedro to board a civilian ship - my first cruise. 22 Navy ships and now a pretty one. I know you must have some important work up there. You have a new great-granddaughter! Becky had a little girl on Monday, January 9 at 6:53 PM. Her name is Madeline Allene. She weighed 6 lbs, 5 oz and is 19 inches long. She has a full head of brown hair. It's hard to tell what color her eyes are yet. It's hard for me to believe my baby had a baby. I guess that is how you felt when I had my children. Dad, she is precious. I wish you were here to be a part of her life. I am sorry that she will never get to know you. I love you and miss you very much.

The memorial service on the USS YORKTOWN in Charleston, SC that the USS ALHENA reunion group held was beautiful and very moving. I know you were there watching over us.The memorial wreath was beautiful and reminded all of us what a sacrifice you and all military families have made for our freedom. Thanks Dad for protecting us while here on earth and I know you are still protecting us from Heaven.

To the family and friends of Chris Walker: I knew Chris from my initial assignment to the MARS program - never having served in Washington, I approached the relationship with all the honor and respect one could give to such a high-ranking official. Chris quickly let me know, however, that he was just a "regular guy". He helped me so much in getting used to the program, as the last time I had been with MARS was the old Army and Air Force system back in the 50s, and now it was the later 60s. I had almost daily contact with him, due to being stationed at a major relay station. And, he always talked about "getting around to it" for some action or other. I kidded him about it, because he definitely was one to accomplish some task he had taken on. But, it was a favorite phrase. Well, at one of our worldwide meetings, he presented me with a "round tuit" - a handmade round piece of wood mounted on a piece of rectangular wood. And, I have carried that thing with me all these years, proudly. Why? It was given to me by a wonderful man, a great friend and a fine gentleman. In my humble opinion, no one could have served his country and his service better than Chris did - he was most assuredly the right man in the right place at the right time. I know absolutely he is up there looking down at us, and being with us. 73, my old friend. You were a terrific representative of your service and made us all look good by your leadership. I had the great pleasure of working with Chris in the MARS program. He was so valuable to the building of an exceptional world wide communications system. We were fortunate to have had him for the time we did. My prayers are with his family.

I am very sorry to have just heard about the passing of my dear friend and Navy buddy, Chris. I shared many wonderful times during my naval career with him. I know he was a wonderful husband and a great dad and grandfather. He cared very much about his family. He will surely be missed by Barbara and I. Our sincere condolences to Jacky and the rest of Chris' family.

I worked with Chris as District Director, Navy-Marine Corps MARS District, Philadelphia, Pa 1968-1970.
