Charles Smith Obituary

Smith III, Dr. Charles Webster 72, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2016, after a courageous battle with bladder cancer. The Chicago born native was born to the union of Charles Webster Smith II and Imogene Smith on June 18, 1943. He was a lifelong resident of Chicago and River Forest, Illinois. He was a devoted son to his mother Imogene Smith who preceded him in death in 2010. Dr. Smith was inspired by his father Charles Webster Smith II who was one of the first African American pharmacists in Chicago. Dr. Smith's father preceded him in death in 1990. Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, he was a member of the first integrated class at St. Columbanus Catholic Elementary School. After graduating from Mt. Carmel High School with honors, Charles received an athletic and academic scholarship to attend the University of Iowa where he graduated. He was very active and played basketball and ran track through college. He continued at the University of Iowa with dental school, before later transferring and graduating from Meharry Medical College in 1968 with a degree in dentistry. Charles opened an office on the South Side of Chicago, which soon turned into a thriving dental practice. He became a central part of the community, treating patients regardless of their ability to pay. He never turned a patient away. After moving his dental practice to Oak Park, he continued to see his patients from all over the city. His dedication to the practice of dentistry made him well-loved and regarded by all of his patients. He took great pride in providing exceptional care for his patients, often making himself available and ready to help at anytime. During this time with few African American dentists, Dr. Smith became a mentor to new dental graduates and helped them in any way he could. Dr. Smith was very social and well-liked by his friends and patients. He gave many parties and was always a loyal friend. Fellow friend and dentist, Dr. Charles Boswell, recalls that Charles was one of the few practicing dentists who always had an open door and was always there to listen and help in any way possible. "When he believed in you, there was nothing he wouldn't do for you." Willa McBride Williams, ex-mother-in-law, stated that she loved and respected him. She stated, "Charles was the best son-in-law one could ask for." Charles was a devoted father to his three daughters. He instilled the importance of education and hard work. He was an avid tennis player and won many local tennis tournaments. He stayed close to his faith and was an active participant at his local church. He leaves behind three daughters, Charla (Steven) Perry, Abigail Smith, and Alexis Smith; three sisters and a brother, Adriene Smith, Marsha Lynn Smith, and Jeffrey Smith who reside in California. He is also survived by his cousin, Naola Adair Brown and niece, Jade Howard. Close friends, Burl Mason Jr., Melvin Wilson Sr., William Peoples, Sally Townsend, Willa McBride Williams, Edward Vaughn, Charles Boswell, Mrs. Rosetta Veal Johnson Green, family and all who had the pleasure of his company will truly miss him. May he rest in peace.

Dr Smith, was always willing to help up and coming dentists. Our field can be competitive. He seemed to always know who the new dentists in the area were and he would chat with them. He and another colleague of mine were chatting after breakfast in Oak Park once , he shared. I didn't even think they knew each other!!

He was also an avid basketball fan. During the Chicago Bulls Championship runs he could break down players strengths and weaknesses like a scout.
Never took much prodding from others for him to tell you that he was on the same Iowa team with future Celtics great Don Nelson who I believe is in the Hall of Fame.

I learned an awful lot from him and miss him daily. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I was introduced to him by a friend since childhood who was once his patient, Mr Larry Allen.
