Cousin Charlie, we miss you more and more each day. Lala and Jeanne have joined you and Larry in heaven. More and more of our family are heading home. We know you all are free of pain and all the positive aspects of passing on to heaven. The ones of us left here on earth are doing our best. I will never forget all your visits to Alabama when we were kids. Also, I will never forget how you and your wonderful police team in Chicago helped me when I became a fraud victim in New York City. It saved me, my career and my sanity. You will never be forgotten in my heart. My Mother and Daddy have joined you all now. It is hard to give people up that you love
Every day, I thank God for so many things. At the top of the list are my family, including you, Aunt Bonnie and the Chicago branch. I turn on Aretha and Marvin Gay and sing and dance - this is a product of growing up in the Muscle Shoals area of North Alabama. WIth my love, your cousin, Butter Bean (Patricia Bevis Mears). To the family on earth, this Alabama born and bred New Yorker cousin will never forget you! You rock!

My heart aches for all of the Roberts family.
I met Charlie when I was 10 years old in 1965 when I was over at the Roberts home on Merrill Ave. The times that Charlie came home to visit, his parents lit up and his brothers, Jeanie and my best friend Bonnie were overjoyed because they knew Charlie was special, the Roberts family was special.
I moved away and lost contact with Bonnie and her family but none of you left my heart. The kindness your family gave to me will never be forgotten.
My deepest condolences.

I entered the Chicago Police Academy and there was Asst. Deputy Superintendent Roberts waiting for his new recruits. He spoke that very first day and he was capitivating. He gave me the motivation not only to succeed as a Chicago police officer but to succeed within my law enforcement career, to never be satisfied, to never stop achieving the next level.
Ten years later while attending Northwestern's Staff and Command school I had the honor once again to be captivated by Mr. Roberts' experiences. He was a true mentor, a cop's cop, who made a lifelong impression upon me. I shall always set him apart from most as he was one of the few great law enforcement leaders that can never be replaced.

I met Charlie several years ago when he was brought to our department to teach us how to implement Community Policing. I had the honor of meeting him again as a student in Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command #252 when he was the Course Director. Charlie was a great teacher and mentor. I credit him with placing me on a path of leadership. When I was appointed Chief of Police, Charlie was one of the first people I called. He will be missed but his lessons will not be forgotten. Thank you Charlie!

Lala, Amy, Cindi, Chris, and brothers and sisters (Jean, John, Billy, Pat and Bonnie Ann), Aunt Mandy,
Your Alabama family has been deeply saddened with the sudden loss of Charlie, Jr. We all knew he walked on water and loved him so much. We will never forget all our good times together - those great visits to Alabama, the lake and the picnics, the visits to Chicago and the wonderful care and advice he gave me throughout my career on Wall Street. I know that Charlie, Sr., Aunt Bonnie (Charlie's grandmother) and Nannie (Charlie's Aunt Wheeler)and Larry were waiting for him at the gates of heaven to welcome him home.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time.
We love you very much,
Cousin Butterbean and the Butler clan of Alabama - Billie and Joe Bevis, Mary Ann Murphy and Gradine Gilbert. West Coast cousins: Lillian (Pete) Lang of Durango, Co and Jeanne Morando of Menlo Park, CA.
