Catherine Delaney Obituary

Delaney, Catherine E. age 92, of Snellville, Georgia, and formerly of Elmhurst, Illinois, passed away Thursday evening, January 10, 2008. Mrs. Delaney was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Delaney, in 1997; and her brother, Peter Rauth, in June 2007. She is survived by her son, Robert J. Delaney, and his wife, Mary C. (O'Donnell) Delaney; and her grandson, James O. Delaney of Snellville; her granddaughter, Tara C. Delaney- Smith, and husband Steven Smith, and great grandson, Riley Patrick Smith of Stone Mountain, GA; and her nieces, Patricia Schmidt of San Diego, CA, and Kathleen Manning of Olympia, WA, and their families. Mrs. Delaney was born and raised in Chicago, in 1955 she and her family moved to Elmhurst becoming parishioners of Visitation Catholic Church, and in 1992 she and her husband relocated to Georgia to be near her son and his family. She was an active member of the St. Francis High School (Wheaton), Mothers Club, and its president in 1964 and 1965. She was an enthusiastic boater, and a member of the DuPage Yacht Club since 1976. Throughout her professional life she acquired a reputation as an astute and honest businesswoman, and as a young woman moved through a series of increasingly responsible positions. Mrs. Delaney retired at the age of 76 from Northwest Mailing Service, of Chicago, after 43 years, contributing to the successful growth of the company. Since her retirement she has focused much of her time on volunteer work, and proudly served the senior population of Emory Eastside Medical Center through "H2U" Senior Friends. She was a member of the close knit faith community of the Monastery of the Visitation in Snellville, GA. Mrs. Delaney had a strong and enduring love of God, which was evident through her love of her husband, family, and friends, and her genuine concern for and service to others. Visitation at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Rd., Elmhurst from 3 to 8 p.m., Sunday. Prayers Monday, January 21, 9 a.m. to Visitation Church. Mass at 9:30 a.m. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery, River Grove. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be appreciated for the Monastery of the Visitation, 2055 Ridgedale Dr., Snellville, GA 30078. We send our deepest sympathies and prayers for your loss. I personally enjoyed working with Catherine over the years and enjoyed our visit when we visited her in GA. A couple of years ago we reconnected and visited by phone. She seemed the same as when I worked with her. I know you will miss her greatly. She was a wonderful person. May the love of family and friends help you through this difficult time.

We will certainly miss seeing Catherine around. We were "Seniors of the Year" representing Emory Eastside H2U/Senior Friends the same year. We also enjoyed seeing her at Steak & Shake for breakfast from time to time. She will be truly missed by many. Everyone loved her.
