When Carolyn and I were growing up, we were always given books for birthdays and Christmas. We collected a series of stories by Madeline Brandeis about children from other countries. My favorite was Little Anne of Canada and one of Carolyn’s was Little Philippe of Belgium. Each volume was a picture of life in some distant land, with a little history and geography rounding out an interesting story about a child our age. These books showed us a world much bigger than the one we knew, and I have often wondered if they sparked our love of travel.

Carolyn made our father cheerful little cards nearly every day during his long illness. With crayons and construction paper, she used her wonderful creativity to brighten his days. Sometimes she would draw a picture or make up a little story, and sometimes she would just write a few words to say she hoped he felt better. It was a thoughtful gift from such a young girl.
