Carmen J. "Spider" Abate

Carmen Abate Obituary

Abate, Carmen J. "Spider" age 57, a life-long Chicago resident, passed away among his son and his closest friends while on a fishing trip to Winneconne, WI, on October 17. He leaves behind a void in the hearts of all who knew him. We will miss his humor and stories of growing up in Bridgeport. Known for his talented voice, he could belt out "Al Di La" and melt the hearts of all who listened. "The neighborhood" will miss the tall guy who many knew as "Spider". He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, cooking, making wine, his trips to Wisconsin and his family and friends. As a Precinct Captain of the 11 Ward Democratic Organization, he was often at the doors of his neighbors working the elections. He worked for the City of Chicago in Streets and Sanitation as an Electrical Repairman for most of the 28 years of service and was member of the I.B.E.W Local 9. Carmen Abate was a devoted and loving father to his daughter, Nicole and son, Carmen, dear friend of Janice McCloskey, loving son of the late Gaspare and Josephine (nee Beifiore) Abate and former husband of Anita Worden. He also left behind his many close friends who were his family. Visitation 2 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, October 22, 2008, at Dalcamo Funeral Home, 470 W. 26th St., Chicago. Funeral Mass 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 23, at All Saints St. Anthony Church, 518 W. 28th Pl., Chicago. Interment private. Info at: 312-842-8681. Remembrances may be made to The National Marfan Foundation, 22 Manhasset Ave., Port Washington, NY, 11050. www.marfan.org

I was blessed with working with a very good friend and my partner in the street light repairs dept.Everybody calls me the general at work. One day we were called to a photo shoot at a location picked out by Phil dote for the 2009 calender. In the month of November you will see Carmie and me repairing a street light,as you know Carmie did not have the best eyesight so we were in place for the picture and Carmie was holding a blue print on the street light circuit and I was checking the piggy back light on the pole when I noticed the blue print Carmie was holding was upside down.that was so funny because after the picture was taken I told Phil and he said I did not matter anyway cause Phil was so for away the camera would not pick up on this as long as he was holding the blue print for the shot...

Dear Carmie and Nicole,
I have spent many a good time with your dad over the years. He helped me build my house years ago when I really needed the help and I have many pictures of him from that and from our fishing trips.
He always had a smile and always always something to say that made you laugh.
He really was one of a kind.
My family loved him as well. Especially my kids and my mom.
Whenever we go fishing in the future there will always be a hole in my heart but there will be a bright light in that hole as I think of him and all the good and bad times we shared.
You both are always welcome here anytime for anything.
He is in a better place now and I am sure smiling down on us and of course his prized possesions...both of you.
Our sympathies.
John, Geri, Joe, Jen, and Grandma Mary and Ben.

What a loss, I can't think of anyone who didn't know Carmie. I spent much of my youth with the guys on Parnell. Carmie was then and will always be a special guy. He always had something to say that would make you laugh and he was a true Bridgeport guy. My condolances and prayers to his family. Your memories will always keep him close.

To Nicole, Carmie and all his extended family. I grew up with Carmie as a second brother to me. I'll always remember that he attended all of my birthday parties growing up, and always gave me a "half slip" that his Mom bought to give me. I will also remember the time he got up on our garage roof and had to wait for my Dad to come home to get him down. Your Dad was incredibly unique and will be missed by all who knew him. His true legacy will be that he always could make anyone laugh. That's a rare gift.

I would like to let his son and duaghter know how much his freindship had a speical meaning to me, I was his work partner for many years. We all know he was limited to the hands on part but he made up for this by all the extra effert he put in on finding the solution to every problem we were faced with.I learned so much from him and I mean things that are not in text books but come from the heart.we had may arguements but always put our differances aside to get the job done. we often would talk about his son which I named ATM and Nicole was the goldcard, by now you should know who I am the "general" I will miss my good freind at work but it comforts me to know he is resting and is in a better place.God bless you Nicole and you brother.

Dear Nicole, Carmie and family

I am very sorry for your loss. I grew up with Carmie and have known him since I was 5 years old. The memories and stories could go on forever. There was the 4th of July when we started George Rosner's porch on fire but all enjoyed the show. There was my going away party we all attended when I entered the Army in 1974 - what a night that was! Best of all there were the many times that he came to our house and shared meals with my parents and my sister. They all love him like a son. I will sure miss him and will always remember the good times we had togehter at "The Sal" which we all knew stood for The Salvation Army where we spent the growing years of our life. My thoughts and prayers go out to all.

Nicole and Carmen,
to say the least I"m shocked. I have known your father since the day he came into the neighborhood. As his longtime Parnell neighbor, we grew up together and have many great memories. We had great bonds with music and with the White Sox. He loved my records, and always reminded me of my 45 collection. And yes I got him started on the Sox! and Yes we blew up my front porch together with our annual fireworks show that didnt quite work out to well!He was a great friend to my Mom( Susie Rosner) following my Dad's death, he always looked out for her. He was a Brideport Icon. I am so sorry that I can't be there to say goodbye to my friend of 50 years, as I am leaving town tomorrow. I will miss him and think of him often.

To the Abate Family;

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. Carmie was friends with my late boyfriend, Dan DiFoggio and I had met him a few times thru Danny. I remember him as fun and always making us feel like family.

May your happy memories comfort you during this difficult time.

Nicole and Carmie,

I am so sorry to hear about your father. It is a shame. He was one of the best and I looked up to him like an uncle. I am glad he was able to attend my wedding and it was even better when he told my father a line from The Godfather, "May your first grandchild be a masculine child." Supposedly, he was practicing it the whole way in the car.

I know everyone calls him Spider, but he will always be Sardines to me. Please, let me know if there is anything I can help with. Anything...

Love,

Peter Caruso

I loved you like a brother big guy...we all loved you....now it's time for you to rest. We will never forget you.

Love,

Dear Abate Family: It is with a very sad heart that I hear about Carmie. Carmie and I have known each other for many many years. He was my brother Darrell's best friend. He had spent many hours at my family's home and has brought much laughter and love to my family. It will never be the same to drive through Bridgeport and not think of him. Please accept my deepest condolences and know that he was loved by many and will truly be missed.

Im sure you are very proud of your Dad, he was really a wonderful person. He never had a bad word for anyone...He just enjoyed life to the fullest. He will be in my prayers.
