Sansone, Carmela
Carmela Sansone (Catalano) died on January 30, 2021, in Venice, Florida, under cancer hospice care at the age of 74. Carmela is survived by her son, Rocco (Kelly), granddaughter, Quinn (11), sisters (Carolina, Pina, Anna), and many nephews and nieces in the United States and Italy. She is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved brother and sister, John Catalano, and Mary Mazzone. Carmela was born in Sicily (Caccamo), Italy, on January 1, 1947 to Giuseppe Catalano and Vincenza Catalano (Messina). She emigrated to the United States, Chicago, IL, with her family in 1957. On December 26, 1970, she romantically eloped and married Vito, and in 1972 they welcomed their only son and child, Rocco, to whom Carmela dedicated her life. Carmela was a devoted mother, loved her family, and was married for nearly thirty years. For the last thirty years of her life, she lived as a proud, independent woman. She grew up in the Near West Side of Chicago, and primarily resided in the neighborhoods of Chicago's - West Cicero Berwyn neighborhood. She enjoyed and was especially gifted at cooking, was a devout Roman Catholic, and a diehard Chicago Cubs fan. She enjoyed spending time with her extended family, especially her younger brother John, and listening to the great Luciano Pavarotti. Her interests also included Civil and Human Rights, Political Science, and read and studied the views, art, and works of Leonardo DaVinci, and the literature of C.S. Lewis and Mark Twain. She was a Cosmetologist for 25 years, a former business owner in the Salon Industry, and an award-winning Teacher's Aide during her years in semi-retirement. Her soul, humor, and energy will be missed by all of those that encountered her.
A Catholic Service is scheduled on March 26th, at 9:30AM at Saint Odilo Church in Berwyn, IL (6617 W 23rd Street, 60614) with Burial Rites to follow at 12:30PM at the Cremation Garden of Saint Gabriel in Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery & Mausoleums, 1400 S. Wolf Road, Hillside, IL. Please RSVP to
[email protected] to attend – there is a 25-person max at the Church Ceremony. Burial Rites will be outdoors - no limit.
