Carl Pettigrew Obituary

Pettigrew, Carl Passed away at his home of 46 years, with his son Carl Newton Pettigrew by his side, into God's hands March 19th 2012. Carl was a retired chemist, real estate investor, entrepreneur, avid golfer, devoted brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was diagnosed with Lewy-Body Dementia in 2009. Carl was born June 16, 1927 in Dolomite, Alabama to Odessa and Newton Pettigrew. Carl was one of nine children; six of whom preceded him in death. Carl attended Brighton Elementary and Brighton High School in Brighton, Alabama. In 1946, after high school, Carl served in the United States Army as a rifle specialist for one year. Following an honorable discharge, he attended Alabama A&M College, where he majored in chemistry, pledged Kappa Alpha Psi, and met the love of his life Evelyn Mann. Carl graduated with honors in 1952. After graduation, Carl moved to Chicago and began his career as a chemist at DeSoto, Inc., an industrial paint and coatings company. Shortly thereafter, he married Evelyn Mann, and they moved to the neighborhood of Chatham on Chicago's south side. He retired from DeSoto, Inc. in 1991 as a quality assurance manager, after 38 years of service. He began a second career, after retirement, when he founded New Venture Realty, LLC, a Chicago property management and real estate investment company, whose mission is to provide quality rental apartments. Carl carried out that mission every day until 2009 when he was no longer able to do so. Carl was a generous person often caring for friends and family in need or in their later stages of life. He and Evelyn (a retired Chicago Public School Teacher) were deep believers in the importance of education for the advancement of African Americans. They established a scholarship in 1999 to assist students who majored in education or science at Alabama A&M. Carl enjoyed the company of his friends and family and was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and Trinity United Methodist Church. He will be dearly missed by many family and friends. A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 13th at 11:00am at Evergreen Cemetery in Evergreen Park, IL followed by a private repast for family and close friends at Trinity United Methodist Church 9848 S. Winchester, Chicago, IL. Donations in lieu-of-flowers may be made to the "Carl and Evelyn M. Pettigrew Scholarship Fund" and sent to the following address: 202 1/2 E. 79th St. Chicago, IL 60619.

Carl Pettigrew was my neighbor. He lived directly across the street from me. Daily I could see him leaving for and arriving from somewhere in his car. He was never one to chit-chat but he never failed to raise his hand and offer a pleasant smile in greeting.

Hi Carl Newton(thats how your dad would refer to you whenever your name came up) I want you to know how much I admired him. In all the years I knew him his sense of honor and fairplay never wavered.I'm sure the chip never fell far from the block.

From the first time we met and realized we were both men of the South, we formed a strong bond. He was very much loved and will be sorely missed.

Nancy and I are deeply saddened to learn
of our dear friend's passing.
Carl and I first met some 50 years ago
at the Illinois Paint Works in Chicago.
He was my boss, friend and someone I could look up to as our careers moved along with DeSoto.
So many great memories of this exceptional man as others have expressed in these writings.
I will miss seeing my friend at our reunion breakfasts and golf outings.
When you see, write or hear the use of the word "class" that was Carl.
Very proud to call him my friend>
To say he will be missed is a great understatement.
God bless you Carl....Heaven just added
another great resident.

Carl Pettigrew was my next door neighbor for over 10 years. He, his wife and son were the best neighbors that anyone could hope for. They were always hospitable, generous and kind. Mr. Pettigrew was a man of high integrity, his word meant something. He was present at my mother's funeral in 2009. The words of encouragement and support that he gave me during our time of bereavement will never be forgotten. He was a great human being, wonderful father, and a blessing to all that had privilege of calling him friend. He will be truly missed. My prayers and thoughts are with the family. Sincerely, Pastor John Veal (Enduring Faith Christian Center).

I got to know Carl from our days at DeSoto, Inc. We did not work that closely because we were in different departments. Still, I came to know him personally and through his reputation as a kind and gentle man. I will most remember his sense of humor and his warm personality. A man of great integrity and honesty, it was truly my pleasure to know him. My most sincere condolences to his family.

Words can not express the terms of my endearing friendship with Mr. Pettigrew. I Never knew his first name and I never needed it, he was my friend indeed.

I worked for Mr. Pettigrew for 13 years and our friendship lasted for 13 years.

Our expression of friendship was protection, understanding, respect, kindness and love. I will miss his smile, his warmth, his joking ways and his remarkable personality.

I look to Carl to make his father proud, to show kindness and compassion to all as his father did. A man like Mr. Pettigrew will be dearly missed.

Carl:
I would like to express my sympathy to you and your family.

Mr. Pettigrew introduced me to my patient — Marguerite Christian — with whom I worked for 9 years. I was never absent or late because I did not want to disappoint him.

He was a great man who was kind, nurturing and gentle.

I will always remember him and will miss his laughter and smile.

Carl was one of my closest friends over the last 40 years. We met at DeSoto, Inc., a paint mgf. plant in Chicago. He became a mentor to me and helped me assimilate into the R&D of formulating coatings. We soon discovered that we had a common passion. Golf. Over the next 19 years we played golf nearly every weekend. We usually had a friendly wager that Carl miraculously would win each week by 1 or 2 strokes. He loved to win, and I loved the competition. A perfect match. I vowed I would best him one day and told him time was on my side since I was 14 years his junior. That time hasn't come yet but I intend for us to resume our matches some day in Heaven. Keep practicing Carl because my game is getting better and better. On a serious note: I have never known a kinder, more generous individual. Farewell friend, and may God bless you with the rewards you most certainly deserve.
Respectfully,
Bob Hollis

Carl was, indeed, a role model for many including yours truly. I will surely miss him. Over the years we would see each other in the Chatham Community and take some time to chat about education and helping students in science. We had a lot in common - both chemistry majors at Alabama A&M, life members of the national alumni association, and active members of the Chicago Local alumni chapter. He and his wife will live on through the wonderful scholarship he established. I extend my most sincere condolences to his son and other relatives who loved him dearly.
