Carl Nielsen Obituary

NIELSEN Carl E. Nielsen, Professor Emeritus of Physics in The Ohio State University Physics department, passed away Monday, May 23, 2005 at his home in Dublin, OH. He was a pioneer in the field of solar pond research and built and operated the longest-running demonstration solar pond in the United States. His expertise led to numerous international consulting visits. His many publications include co-authorship of a book about solar ponds. Before turning to solar research he was active in research in plasma physics and in the stability of accelerator beams. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Imogene; his three children, Paul, Sylvia, and Ravi; his five grandchildren, Theodore, Benjamin, Anna, Teresa, and Kimberly; and great-grandchild, Briar. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 28th at 2 p.m. in the First Unitarian Church, 93 West Weisheimer Rd., Columbus, OH. Contributions may be made to the Nielsen Solar Pond Research Fund, care of the Physics Department, The Ohio State University.
