Carl Bernstein Obituary

Bernstein, Carl 81, of Northbrook, IL, died Tuesday, August 21st, of heart failure in Evanston Hospital. Carl was born and raised in Chicago. In grammar school he was an avid basketball player and won local Checkers and Horseshoe Tournaments. He then attended Lane Tech High School, where he became captain of the varsity basketball team. After high school, Carl went to the University of Michigan, studying organic chemistry and playing college basketball, while simultaneously holding down two jobs, before transferring to the University of Illinois to complete his chemistry degree. Following college, Carl enlisted in the Army, serving four years during WWII. He then went to work for Emulsol Corporation. While at Emulsol, Carl met and married Geraldine Medow. Eventually, Witco Chemical Corporation acquired Emulsol. Carl retired at Witco as the Vice-President of Urethane Research. Many things come to mind about Carl during his adult life. He was an avid and skilled golfer until his 70's, when back problems prevented him from shooting his age. He always enjoyed a good meal, was always looking for the next great restaurant, and certainly loved a good cigar. He loved science, continuing to read scientific journals throughout his life. He truly enjoyed a good debate on any topic but especially relished discussing science versus religion. He was unrelentingly true to his own beliefs; firmly practicing the credo, "live and let live"; was courageously driven solely by whatever he believed was the right course of action; was self- assured in his own sense of value; and was very, very proud of his children. Two sons, Alan and Dick; two grandchildren, Kathryn and Ryan; and brother, Bill Hoffman survive Carl.
