Calvin Evans (Babe) was born on Feb. 28, 1943, in Okolona, Mississippi, Chickasaw County. He was the third son of the late Herman Evans Sr. and Alzonia Shannon Evans.
When Calvin was young, his family relocated to Kingsford Heights, Indiana. He graduated from Union Township High School (Class of '64). Cal was a multi-sport athlete and star basketball player.
When he graduated, he was the school's all-time leading scorer, and was recognized as one of the best ballplayers in the county.
It was there in high school that Calvin would meet the love of his life and eventual wife of 58 years, Frances Dunlap.
After graduation, Calvin found employment at Whirlpool Corporation, where he worked as an accountant. After 30 years at Whirlpool, he was offered early retirement, which he eagerly accepted to "do nothing" and "drive my grandkids around," in his words. This he did with much delight.
In 1966, Calvin married his high school sweetheart, Frances M. Dunlap. Together they raised two beautiful children, Robyn Evans-Long and Rodney Evans. Calvin professed a belief in Christ at an early age and attended New Jerusalem C.O.G.I.C. of Kingsford Heights, Indiana.
There, he and his brothers, known as the "Bo Boys Quartet," ministered through song. Later in life, Calvin united with New Hope M.B.C. in Michigan City, Indiana, where he was a member of the men's choir, the Layman's ministry, Sunday School and a member of the board.
In 2014 Calvin and Frances moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, to live with their daughter, Robyn, and son-in-law, Kevin. Upon relocating, Calvin became a member of Metropolitan M.B.C. He was a faithful member – substitute teaching Sunday school and singing with the male chorus.
Babe was a devoted family man and if you knew him, you knew that he was a super fan of the Chicago Bulls and Bears.
In addition to his passion for sports, he loved listening to "his" gospel music (jokingly called funeral music by his grandchildren) on the screened-in deck, also known as "his office." Cal also loved to play cards with his wife and read western and mystery novels.
On Sunday, June 27, 2021, Calvin answered the call to come home to be with the Lord at 78 years old. Calvin was preceded in death by his twin brother Alvin; his father and mother; siblings, Jessie Tillman, James Smith and Luria Clifton; as well as his grandson, Sean Gillespie.
He leaves to cherish his legacy his wife, Frances Evans; two daughters, Tonya Gillespie of Knoxville, Tennessee; Robyn Evans-Long (Kevin) of Indianapolis, Indiana; and one son, Rodney Evans (Tamea) of Louisville, Kentucky. Calvin also leaves three brothers, Frank of Kingsford Heights, Indiana, Larry and Herman Jr., both of Michigan City, Indiana; two sisters, Lillie "Pearl' Davis of Michigan City, Indiana, and Ella Carter of Minneapolis, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Tony Gillespie, Raven Cash (Lorenzo), Syandene Evans, Nigel Long, Danielle Long, Raechel Long and Calvin Evans; four great-grandchildren, Nyla Cash, Jamison Long, Denver Cash and Khari Cooley; and a whole host of nieces, nephews, family and friends who will cherish his memory forever.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 2, 2021, at Metropolitan M.B.C., 2815 Sutherland Ave., Indianapolis, Indiana, from 9-11 a.m., with a Celebration of Life service at 11 a.m. Burial will be held at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.

Calvin was one of the best basketball players in northern Indiana. He was an excellent ball handler and shooter. He would literally take control of a game. He was a great competitor. Union Township was a very strong team during the years that he and his brothers played there. Prayers go out to his family for their loss.
