Brian Meyer Obituary
FORT PIERRE - Brian Meyer died on September 2, in his home in Fort Pierre from cancer. Brian was under the care of Hospice and surrounded by his family. Family will receive callers from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 4, with a 7 p.m. Prayer Service, Feigum Funeral Home, Pierre. Private family memorial service and committal will be held.
Brian B. Meyer was the only child born to Boyd & Edythe (Hawley) Meyer on October 5th, 1943. He graduated from Alexandria H.S. in 1961, received a Bachelor of Science Degree with a Political Science Major in 1966, and then attended the Univ. of South Dakota School of Law and received a Juris Doctor Degree in 1969. While in Law School he served as Editor of the South Dakota Law Review, and as National Chairman of the Student Bar Activities Committee of the Student Division of the American Bar Association in 1968. Brian was united in marriage with Janice Hanner on Sept. 5th, 1967. After law school he joined Anderson Hutchinson Law Firm in Huron, S.D. Prior to starting his own law practice in Onida, S.D., in 1972, Brian served as legal advisor to Governor Kneip. He has been a member of the Bank West Board since 1982 and prior served on the Sully County Bank Board. Brian served on the Sully Buttes School Board for six years and was president for one. He also served 6 years on the South Dakota Gaming Commission.
In 1979, partner Darla Rogers joined the Meyer Law Firm. Meyer & Rogers then moved their law practice to Pierre, S.D. in 1997. Meyer and Rogers Law Firm has been a long-time advocate for South Dakota's telephone and electric cooperatives on both the state and national levels. Brian has been instrumental in representing the telephone, electric, and hospital industries in many legislative initiatives. On October 2nd, 2003 Brian will be inducted into the S.D. Co-op Hall of Fame. He also received the East River Electric Eminent Service Award in June of 2003.
Brian is survived by his wife Jan of Fort Pierre, two sons, Charles & wife Kathryn and their children Trenton, Davis, and Allison, all of Castle Rock, CO, Norman & wife Julie and their daughter Hattie of Sioux Falls.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the South Dakota Law School Foundation, the Countryside Hospice of Pierre, or SDATC Brian Meyer Scholarship Fund.
