Brian Friedler Obituary

Friedler, Brian Craig

Brian Craig Friedler, 63, died Sunday evening December 6th, 2020. He was a beloved husband and dedicated father to his soulmate of 40 years Laura Durkin and son Kyle Friedler. He is preceded in death by his parents Fredrick Friedler and Selma (nee Lind) Friedler as well as by his brother Michael Friedler. He is survived by his brother Dennis Friedler and wife Catherine Tutter as well as many loving nieces and nephews and a grandniece and grandnephew. Coming from generations of Jewish Cantors, his life was influenced by music and art. In his 20s he was the keyboard player and co-song writer for the band American Taboo which got significant airplay on college radio across North America. Throughout his life, he continued to play the piano for his family. Brian was an owner of the iconic Bucktown bar The Artful Dodger Pub for 21 years. His knowledge about alcohol brought him to the wine and spirits industry after selling the Dodger building in 2005. In the process, he found joy traveling around the Chicago area meeting fellow enthusiasts. He loved to bless those close to him with an eclectic taste in music and art, cooking and mixing cocktails. Brian fostered community in all that he did. Always a host, his family and many friends were lucky to experience his hospitality and cooking. He always gifted those around him with a sense of humor or his thoughts on politics and current events. In lieu of flowers, Brian has asked that donations be made to one of these three organizations: United Negro College Fund, Southern Poverty Law Center, or his temple, Makom Shalom. Livestream information: on Weds. December 9, at 10:30 AM, search for the Weinstein & Piser Funeral Home Facebook page through Facebook or Google, then scroll down to Brian's name and click on it. Dear Laura and Kyle,
I am very sorry about Brian's passing. The last time I ran into Brian was at a big whiskey tasting. He was going this way and I was going that way. We said our hellos to one another and went on our ways. I look at those days at the Artful Dodger with fondness, and I hope that years of happy memories will comfort you during this sad time. Julie also sends her sincere condolences.

My memory of Brian at his home for Makom Board meetings. He cooked
great food and had samples of wine coupled with a education as he poured. The salad in the biggest bowl I had ever seen beautiful in appearance and taste. His spirit went into the the food. Brian was intense and charming. During the meeting we gathered around his dinning room table many times. His wit and humor would go with the subject as we planned events, made decisions by show of hands. Kyle and Laura around making guest appearance,I could see in his eyes he adored them both.A treat when he held the meeting. The grand piano taking a chunk of the living room. Music, art food books conversation abound.Nothing boring about this guy and opinions to match is politics.
I will miss Brian and funny whenever I drink a wine he suggested I will remember meetings on Springfield and glad I was on the board same time as he was to have a chance to know him

Hello, I have been friends with Dennis and Catherine for over thirty years and of course I met Brian and Laura on a few different occasions in their apartment in Chicago and in Colorado when we took at least one mountain trip that involved some very scary hairpin turns on a mountain road in the dark. As I remember, Brian was terribly adventurous and willing to try all kinds of things. I feel sad reading about his passing and my heart goes out to his family.

Deepest condolences to Brian's family. May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.

I worked with Brian years ago, at Wein-Bauer, and he was one of the most knowledgeable people I've encountered in my years in this industry.
