Bernice Art Obituary

Art, Bernice Passed away peacefully in Livermore, California, from complications of surgery on June 5, 2015. A most remarkable woman: wherever she went, she made friends. She knew everyone and everyone liked her. Born in Chicago in 1922, she was college educated, a rarity in her time, and worked many years as an administrative assistant for executives of insurance companies, even commuting on the train from Fox Lake. She married Sam Art in San Antonio, Texas just before he was shipped out to Europe for WWII as an officer and a bombardier. She came to Livermore in 1996 after the death of her beloved husband in 1993. She was an active member of the Livermore Lioness Club, the Livermore Senior Center and Congregation Beth Emek and was often an Officer. She was also a world traveler who enjoyed trips to Europe, Australia, Thailand, the Panama Canal and other places too numerous to mention, with family and friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sam Art; parents, Sam and Celia Leland; brothers, Benn and Ray Leland; sisters-in-law, Zelda Leland; and her son, Robert Art. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Nona Leland and Lillian Stoller of Chicago; son, James Art of Pleasanton; daughters-in-law, Karen Art of Portland and Ruth Van Art of Pleasanton; grandchildren, Cindy Marten of San Jose, and Brian and Emily Art of Portland. She is also survived by countless relatives and friends all over the United States who will miss her bright smile and gentle manner. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be sent to: CBE, 3400 Nevada Ct., Pleasanton, CA 94566. Graveside service will be Tuesday, June 30 at 1:00 p.m. Menorah Gardens Cemetery (near Forest Park), 2630 S. 17th Ave., Broadview, IL 60155.
