He and his wife were the kindest people I have ever met. He was my first boss at CNA back in 1962. They helped us to settle in Chicago and made us feel welcome. I will always remember him.

I am very sad to hear about the passing of Bernard Baum. Dr. Baum helped me as the first student from China in his department. Bernie and his wife Barbara showed me great generosity and affection. Dr. Baum always had great dignity. I looked up to him. He will be greatly missed.

It has been so difficult to process and digest the thought of Bernie passing away. His friendship and support meant the world to me and I will never forget his arresting presence, humor, insight, and unabashed opinions. I relished every meeting and conversation with him and he never failed to give me something to think about after we got together. He will always be with me and I'll think about him often, very often.
To his family I extend my heartfelt condolences.

Dear Baum Family,
I read with sadness and fond memories the death notice of your father Dr. Baum who was one of my first professors in the MBA program at UIC. From the first day with his magnetic presence, obvious dedication and enthusiasm for the content he was teaching I knew I had made the right decision in selecting this class. I learned more in that class about the basics of organizational behavior and human resource management than I learned in any other class. His themes of respect and human dignity were woven through all of the topics covered. Mostly I noticed through his dynamic lectures and engagement with students how much he enjoyed what he did. In reading the notice I found more parallels from his life - my husband was also born in Germany and arrived in the US. at age 7, my Dad worked as a broker for CNA for many years and in many ways his personality reminded me of my Dad. I have never forgotten many of the analogies and examples used in class regarding managing and communicating effectively with people. And I use these in classes I teach in business at a community college today. It was truly a privilege to have met your father and to have been the recipient of his wisdom and knowledge and to observe his wonderful zest for life.
My condolences to all of you.

Dear Baum Family:
Bernie was my professor of Organizational Management at UIC, way back in 1967. I loved his class, and he as an instructor. He was a most dignified man, and always wore the sharpest suits of any professor at the school. The last few years, I saw the General giving the salutes from the reviewing stand at the Evanston 4th of July Parade in his dress green uniform. I would always go up to him and say hello from a former UIC student, after the parade was over. He actually remembered me, after all those years. I had no idea all he had gone thru in his early life, until I read his obit in the Tribune. I will miss him.

Whether dancing a Viennese Waltz or saluting the flag at a July 4th parade, Bernie was straight-backed and proud. He was a model of gentility and had the perfect balance of pride and humility. He was one of those rare people that always make it a priority to greet you with a smile, handshake or hug and a real sense of appreciation. Losing him, I and the band lose a little bit of our history. We miss you already, Bernie, and you're right--they don't make men like you anymore!

To the family of Bernard Baum:
Please accept my condolences for Bernie's death. Bernie was an early customer of our bank, South Central Bank, the bank having been founded in the mid-1960's near the UIC community. Bernie enjoyed telling me of his loyalty, which was sincere and very true, and much appreciated, long after he left UIC. I will miss having a short conversation with him, talking to Bernie on the phone, and having a cheerful message left for me with one of our customer service staff people. Business (as life) would be so much more wonderful, if every person was a "mench" like Bernie. I will always remember him, and wish his family the blessings of his fond memory. May he rest in peace.

One gets to know their Beth Emet family and Bernie was one of them. It was always good to see him and say hello or Shabbat Shalom. It was so hard to read the e-mail about him and to know there will be an empty spot where he used to sit and not see him again at Beth Emet. There is one's family and there is Beth Emet family and he will be missed. Carol Hirsch

Bernie's spirit, thoughtfulness, and grace will be truly missed. He was an American patriot and a leader in the historical Reform movement. As a life long associate, twenty-five year Board member, and most recently as the Chairman of the American Council for Judaism he was a passionate, respectful, guiding influence. We are all fortunate and better people for having known Bernie. With our sincere condolences and since of loss.
