I just now learned of Art's passing, so I'm not sure anyone will even see this. I suppose you'd say that Art found us. He began corresponding with us about the time he lost his wife Bev. He would send us small items to auction off at the annual 4-H auction, or even just send a donation or two. These were always directed to our 4-H Companion Animal Committee. He shared pictures of Bev with us, and let us know of her work with the Lake County Animal Protection Association. Art's connection to Manistee is that his family owned land in the county at one time. I had been unusually busy last year and hadn't heard from him and thought I'd check on it today. He was a dear friend of Manistee County 4-H.

Art Salo didn't attend school with us; however, he graduated with our class on June 8, 1967. He walked the stage with us, proud that he finally received his diploma at the age of 41, after working nine years to achieve it. His high school years were interrupted by the Korean War and life in general, and he was honored that his name--Arthur Mathew Salo--appeared in our Commencement Exercises program.

Art, we were also honored by your presence at our graduation. You were an inspiration to us, demonstrating that no matter what difficulties life throws at us, you can achieve your goals if you set your mind to it. You were the living example of perseverance!

Thank you for that inspiration!
