It was an honor first know Tony when I was in the State Legislature and Tony as the Director of Financial Institutions for the State of Illinois, down through the years as a fellow "Sunday Runner" with faithful Lupe ever at his side. His great generosity benefited so many, as did his friendship.

I am deeply saddened by the death of Tony. He was the kind of man a community could follow and lean on when times demanded thought and action.

The first time I walked into Tony Fornelli's office I was a young writer turning academic and somewhat nervous as I sat across from him at his desk. Quite intimidated by his presence, I knew I needed his help, but not sure how he could help me. Tony immediately set me at ease and we talked a long time about what it was I wanted to accomplish in my attempts to build Italian American studies in the Chicago area. I realized then that Tony, more than helping me with financial support, had helped me to learn more about the world and the people in it who are committed to making a difference.

As my career grew, and there were young people sitting across the desk for me in similar situations as I had found myself back then, I always recalled Tony's reception, how to recognize talent, and how to help them find the opportunities they needed to put that talent to work. I will be forever grateful for this gift.

May he rest in peace and the aura of having created a legacy through his actions.
