Annette McGrath Obituary

McGrath, Annette F. (nee Keller) After a long battle with cancer and several invitations from the Lord, on February 4, 2009, Annette peacefully agreed to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. Annette was formerly of Oak Lawn, IL and a long-time resident of Sarasota, FL. While residing in Florida, Annette was surrounded by many wonderful loving friends and beautiful sunshine along with the enjoyment of being the avid hostess and volunteer for Mote Marine Lab. At Mote Marine, she helped to bring the understanding of sea science to the public. She was a fond admirer of Fannie May Chocolates and H & D Pears and if you were offered either, you knew it was a real big deal. In Oak Lawn, she was a volunteer at Advocate Christ Hospital, the Once Upon a Time Picture Lady that went to Kolmar School and long-time member of the Southwest Women's Club. She will be long remembered and held closely in our hearts. Mom's favorite quote, "Life is a Beach". Mom's repeated sayings, "I want nothing maudlin" and "Who was in my candy box?" She is survived by her daughter, Patti; and devoted son-in-law, Billy, cherished grandmother of Vicki, Jacki and Nick, loving sister of Florence "Floss" Kawa, and late husband, Henry "Hank", brothers, Jack (Gail) Keller and Donald (Therese) Keller, kind aunt of many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her dear parents, John and Margaret (nee Dickey) Keller, husband, William McGrath, daughter, Terri McGrath, and brother, Robert, and sister-in-law, Kay Keller, and many other very dear and missed friends. Per Annette's request, in lieu of services, memorials in her name may be sent to Mote Marine Laboratory, 1600 Ken Thomas Parkway, Sarasota, FL 34236, www.mote.org. Arrangements made by Robert J. Sheehy & Sons Funeral Home, 708-857-7878 www.sheehyfh.com.

~My Nanie and Me in Florida~

Victoria Dooley

February 11, 2009

I just wanted to say a few words about my Nanie. This hasnt been easy for me. I know she is in a better place, however that doesn't change the sadness I do have. Im going to miss trips to the mall, Olive Garden, and vacations I took to Florida almost every year to visit her. Ever since I was born I had such a connection with her. I spent about every weekend there as a child growing up.Swimming, walkin to walgreens, and can't forget 2-for-1 pasta night at Papa Joes.I guess you can say she spoiled me rotten. From bikes to clothes, from candy to toys, Nanie had it all. But the one thing she tried drawing the line on was my barbies. Not to mention I already had every barbie imaginable, but once in a while I'd try to give her reasons on why I needed just one more. I guess it must have been hard to say no to me because next thing I knew I had a barbie dream house, a barbie mall, a workin barbie kitchen ,and a million and a half barbie outfits. She told me I suckered her in : ) I didn't get off that easy though because then I owed her a back scratch with my long nails.I'm fortunate to have had such a relationship with my grandma. An important thing to me and may be one of the best parts was that we could talk about anything. I was never embaressed to tell her things. I could confide in her because she would never judge me, think less of me. To her I was still her vicki and she loved me no matter what.
My birthday was Jan 27th and I couldnt be happier that I was able to speak to her that day, hear one last Happy Birthday and that she loved me.
Words can't express how much I'm going to miss her.

I'll Love you forever and ever, and when we meet again you better have some Chocolate Turtles ready because we will have alot of catching up to do.

My life changed forever with the blessings of the McGrath's moving nextd oor to our family on 106th street. I finally got the baby sisters Ialways wanted. And while my Mom worked I stayed at your house because your Mom opened her heart and home to me and I always had a place to hang out.My fondest memories are playing dress up with you and Terri and swimming with you two, playing hula rummy in the back yard with the Bosco's & Reimers.
The really hot summer evenings (before we all had air conditioning)spent in the pooland after we got out your Mom would small fires in the grill so we could roast marshmellows. The fun trips to Pell Lake
(Terri eating the exlax)and all the laughs we enjoyed running from our house to yours, so much so my Dad finally put flag stone in because he was sick of replanting grass because we were constantly killing it.
Your Mom let me buy her old car(my first, a 1963 Chevy)of course she made me wash it for years, always with the promise that someday it would be mine andi t was. Annie taught me how glamour was every- thing howto stop biting myfinger nails by wearing false ones(with her the longer the
better), how to apply false eyelashes and wigs,...... I loved her 24hour beauty shop in the basement and oh those horrible perms/dye jobs she gave me.Christmas time was always so special at your house because Santa came to you on Christmas Eve and we were always wecome to come
over to see just what Santa had brought you and play with all your toys. The art projects we did all together and your Moms oilpaintings that she signed "Zsa "(like Zsa,Zsa Gabor) still make me crack up.
To this day I still smile when I think of your Mom eating habits.Cashews for breakfast with a little popcorn on the side and all washed down with her coke a cola. The breakfast of champions Annie style. The McGrath house was always full of the best junk food and who didn't love Annies sugary fudge. I could fill a book full of wonderful times with your Mom. We really had lots of fun. Shopping with your Mom was a day long adventure, we would leave in the morning and return at night with the trunk full of all kinds of stuff, she loved to shop. The wonderful friendship our Mothers enjoyed,oh they loved to pal around with each other and their travels. Wherever Annie was Norine was right by her side, walking, or on those three wheelers in the neighborhood. The last time I spoke to your Mom she knew she was dying and
we said our goodbyes, I asked her if she wanted to see me and she said no, in a way I was glad because now I can hold
the wonderful memories of her in my heart. So Bon Voyage my dearest Annie may you be at peace. Patti, I will think of
your Mom as I stare at the next ocean I see and think of how happy she will be at her requested final resting place. She loved the water, sun and especially her girls. May God bless you Patti and your family for
your tender care and kindness to both
your Mom and Dad, I know it was not easy in the end. We love you. All our Love and prayers, Patti (aka kid hav)..Nora and Jim

Dear Patty and family,

I was so sorry to hear about your mother's passing. I didn't even know she was so ill. I hadn't heard from her in a long while and now I know why. I am glad that she was able to spend time in Florida although I always missed her being right across the street. We saw a lot of each other in the last few years that she lived in Oak Lawn. But I was still happy for her when she moved to Florida because I knew how much she loved the warm weather. My husband and I visited her once when we were on vacation and then she came to our wedding, which was the last time I saw her. She was a great lady. Once again, I am so sorry for your loss. For those of us left here on 106th St. and the others who have moved on to different places, we will remember her always and keep you in our prayers.
