Family-Placed Death Notice

GIBSON, Anne Anne Ruth Chadwick Gibson, formerly of Chattanooga, TN, died Thursday, August 28, 2008, at Dogwood Forest of Dunwoody Assisted Living in Sandy Springs, GA. Mrs. Gibson was born December 29, 1916, in Sulphur Springs, DeKalb County, Alabama, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Floyd Chadwick. She attended the University of Alabama from 1935 to 1937. Mrs. Gibson was a 45-year member of Central Presbyterian Church (Chattanooga) until its closing in 2000, at which time she became a member of First Presbyterian Church. At Central, she served as librarian and Chairman of Grounds. As a member of Missionary Ridge Garden Club, she served as Roadside Chairman for many years and enjoyed being a flower show judge. Mrs. Gibson was a member of the Nancy Ward Chapter of the DAR and served on the Chattanooga Tree Advisory Commission for several terms. She was a Life Member of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation; a Founding Member of The Nature Conservancy in Tennessee; a Charter Member of the American Birding Association; and a Founding Member of the Roger Tory Peterson Institute. Beginning in World War II, Mrs. Gibson was an American Red Cross nurse's aide and served the Red Cross in various capacities for over 25 years. She was an avid birdwatcher and traveled to East Africa, Manitoba, Panama, and many US states to add to her birding lifelist. Anne spent the winter months for many years on Sanibel Island, FL, where she enjoyed gardening, shell collecting, and observing island wildlife. She supported the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra and numerous environmental organizations, instilling in her children a lifelong love of classical music and nature. She shared her keen interest in education and learning with friends and family and established both the Program for Excellence in Environmental Studies and a need-based scholarship fund at the McCallie School. Mrs. Gibson was pre-deceased in 1994 by her husband, Carl Leland Gibson. She is survived by a daughter, Lucinda Anne Gibson (Thomas A. Myers) of Sandy Springs, GA; son Jonathan Carl Gibson (Eliza D. Mabry) of Shrewsbury, VT; granddaughters, Cailey Susannah Mabry Gibson of Somerville, MA and Sarah Chadwick Gibson of Shrewsbury, VT; sister, Maxine Chadwick Chrosniak (Mrs. Charles E.) of Charlotte, NC; brother, Kenneth Floyd Chadwick of Shoup, ID; and nephew, Charles E. Chrosniak, Jr. of Oakton, VA. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 13, 2008, at 2:00 at First Presbyterian Church, Chattanooga. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Chattanooga Area American Red Cross, 801 McCallie Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37403 or to the McCallie School, Program for Excellence in Environmental Studies, 500 Dodds Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37404.
