Amy Elizabeth Porte

Amy Porte Obituary

Amy Elizabeth Porte of Helena died of pancreatic cancer at her home on Dec. 2, 2007. She was 46.

In the early morning hours of Feb. 14, 1961, as Amy was beginning to make known her impending arrival, her dad called Dr. Tom Hawkins to ask, "Do you think you can make it through the blizzard in that new T-Bird to deliver a valentine?" He could and did, and Amy has been the heart of her family ever since.

Amy attended Jefferson Elementary School and graduated from Helena High School in 1979. She was a student at Montana State University majoring in art and later graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle with a degree in graphic design. She worked at the Port of Seattle for several years before returning to Helena, where she worked at Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Amy was employed as a Compliance Specialist-Medicaid for the Montana Department of Health and Human Services at the time of her death.

Besides her job with the state, which she loved, Amy enjoyed gardening, art and design projects of all kinds. Everything she touched became a work of art. She refinished furniture, did fine embroidery, read everything she could get her hands on. Her siblings described her as the "best skier of the bunch," flying fearlessly downhill, graceful as a bird. She enjoyed skating at Spring Meadow Lake, cross country skiing, sailing her mom's little boat, "Sister Moon" at the family summer home on Lindbergh Lake, swimming and water skiing. Often at dusk, when the lake was entirely still, she would go in the canoe with her flute and serenade the world with lovely, haunting music. She had a wry sense of humor and a sparkle in her dark eyes that endeared her to those who knew her.

Amy is survived by her parents, Dick and Neva Porte of Helena; brothers, Chuck Porte (Dawn) and Glenn Porte of Helena; brother, Paul Porte of Seattle; sister, Sanna Porte (Dave Carr) of Helena; sister, Ellen Cameron of Missoula; and beloved partner and devoted caregiver Chuck Witkowski. Other survivors include nieces Marissa and Meaghen Porte; nephews, Casey Porte and Alex Cameron; her Aunt Claudia and Uncle Blake Zinnecker of East Helena; and numerous cousins and friends.

A memorial service for Amy is scheduled for 11 a.m., at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Helena on Monday, Dec. 10, with a reception to follow in the fellowship hall. Memorial donations in Amy's name are suggested to Hospice of St. Peter's, 2475 Broadway, Helena, MT 59601.

The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at St. Peter's Hospital and Billings Clinic, also Sherry and Melinda of Hospice of St. Peter's, for their wonderful support and care, and Dr. Maggie Stockwell who was Amy's friend and primary care provider.

"Father and mother, weep no more. Brothers and sisters, weep no more. She's resting in the loving arms of Jesus."

To the Porte Family:
I was very saddened to hear of Amy's passing. She was a wonderful sister-in-law, and a very special part of the Davidson family several years ago. We all loved Amy very much. We've stayed in touch all these years through Christmas and birthday cards, and pictures, so she could see her other nieces and nephews growing up and having children of their own. They all adored Amy. She will always be in our hearts. Bless all of you.

To the Porte family and friends,
It is sad to hear of Amy's passing. So far removed from Helena now, we had no idea she was fighting her life battle. Memories come back of all of us kids (and there were many then!) playing in that neighborhood on the edge of civilization that was Helena. These memories now stay with us all. Amy, even as one of the "little kids" stood out with her smile and kind ways. In her youth is how I remember her. My thoughts are with you all Dick, Neva, Chuck, Sanna, Ellen, Glenn and Paul.

Amy was among the first students I met during my first year of teaching American Government at Helena High. Amy was so special and dear that I remember exactly where she sat in the classroom! The beautiful artwork she did for City-County Days became the guidebook for this Senior project, and I still have her originals in my box of memories. What a beautiful person Amy was, and she lives forever in my mind and heart. God's blessings and deepest condolences to Amy's family.

I cried when I heard the sad news about Amy's passing. She was such a wonderful person and I will miss her so much. For me she has always been a steady rock on my trips through Helena. It will be hard to come to Helena now and not be able to see her. She was the most cheerful and most welcoming person whenever I saw her. People like Amy have made this planet a better place. She was taken too early. Yet, she has touched so many hearts and I will always keep her in my memories.
I cannot imagine what a loss this is for the rest of your family and from my deepest heart, I wish you all the strength to get through this difficult time. I will keep you all in my prayers. Amy was so wonderful.

My heart goes out to your family. Although I did not know Amy well, just in passing, I am a 81 HHS grad and work at BCBSMT. Many of the gals she worked with in Medicare work here, and they are heartbroken also. I have not seen you for a long time, Glenn, but I know that you are blessed with the rest of your family and the time you had with your sister. God bless you all.

Your passing was too soon!

I have such fond memories of you from my years growing up in Helena and all of the art classes we took together in High School.

We sure had fun!

To her close friends and family, please accept my deepest sympathy, I know she will be misssed greatly.

Dearest Porte Family,

I grew up just across the street from the Portes. There were five children in the Bovington clan and we matched up beautifully with the children from their home. I have been wandering down memory lane thinking of the wonderful times we had with all of them. Both of our families also had summer homes on Lindbergh Lake as well so we swam and canoed and laughed the summers away. I cannot even begin to imagine the pain of Amy's passing. She was such a special person with a beautiful and heartfelt smile. My love goes out to your family. I'm sure my siblings share in sending their love to all of you.

To my friend Amy and her loving Family:
The Porte family entered my life when I transferred from the Southern reaches of the United States to Bozeman , Montana to attend Montana State University. I walked into my assigned dorm room and was greeted with the warmest smile and the endearing charm of my new roomate and wonderful friend to be, Amy Porte. I think of our times at school together and the friends that we made while living in Bozeman. Amy and all of the family brought me into their home and to their wonderful cabin on Lindberg Lake, where Amy shared a canoe ride with me as the snow fell around us on the still lake. It was a moment in time. I want to express my love and condolences to all of you and I know that Amy will always be with us in our hearts. She has never left mine!
To all of the family, Neva,Dick, Chuck and Dawn, Sana, Ellen, Paul, Glenn , my heart and thoughts are with you all at this time and I wish you all peace. To Chuck, Amy's life partner, I wish you peace and loving thoughts.
Words can not express the many things that I would like to say, so I will say I love you all and you are still very much a part of me as Amy was. She was so special and very talented. She will be missed by all that knew her. I will forever remember her smile and laugh:) She is an Angel.
With deepest sympathy and regards,
Eve

What do you say when you can't find the words? If only. If only one could go back to those days at Jefferson. If only the pinhole camera's we made worked. If only. Best wishes to Amy and her family. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
