Alicia Serna Obituary

Alicia T. Serna Passed away peacefully in her home early Wednesday morning, September 15, 2010 surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Alicia, a recognized resident of Espanola, was known for her style and her grace. She was an outspoken woman, who was passionate about her family. Proud of her Chimayo heritage, Alicia frequently referred to herself as a "Chimayosa," and celebrated New Mexico's diverse cultures with a special love for Native American Art and Jewelry which she constantly displayed on her person and in her home. Her love for American Indian Jewelry and Art was only surpassed by her love for the Native American people. A woman ahead of her time, she taught us all to appreciate the differences in other people, and embrace these differences with respect and sensitivity. Her understanding and compassion for others, instilled in her children a keen sense of right and wrong, and she expected nothing less of them. She was preceded in death by her Husband, Pete E. Serna; the two of them shared 62 years of marriage together. The emptiness created by her death will be filled with many loving and fond memories of her life and contributions to each of our lives. Her spirit will live on in all of us. The family wishes to extend special gratitude to all of those who have sent prayers and condolences, and to the professional and conscientious service provided by Dr. Murray Ryan and Amber Care whose personnel were always available during this trying period. She was preceded in death by her 3 brothers: Jerry, Elias and Ismael Trujillo; and a sister, Rosenda Segura. She is survived by her children: Priscilla Pulakos of Albuquerque, Eileen Serna of Española, Eric P. Serna and wife Barbara of Santa Fe and Romaine Serna of Albuquerque; 3 brothers: Leopoldo Trujillo of Española, Arturo Trujillo of Mesa, AZ and Floyd Trujillo of Santa Fe; 1 beloved sister, Cleo Peralta of Albuquerque; grandchildren: Tacy Pulakos-Baumann, Lesa Vigil, Dino Serna, Rico Valdez, Alicia Valdez-Abrums, Marisa Serna-Malarkey, Erica Alicia Swanson, Jon-Carlo Serna, Marco Peter Serna and Marsella Duarte, Camilla Duarte and JoiLe Duarte; 8 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends. A rosary will be recited on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 17, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Española. Burial will follow at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Cemetery. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be all of her grandchildren. The family of Alicia T. Serna has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley. 505-747-7477, www.devargasfuneral.com
