Alice Mills Obituary

Mills, Alice Solar Of Wilmette, Illinois, passed away on January 19, 2016. She was ninety-two years old. Alice was born in Chicago on May 18, 1923. She was the daughter of the late Sylvia Salgen Solar and Joseph Solar. She was preceded in her death by her husband of fifty-six years, Girard Mills. Alice lived in the Chicago area throughout her life, settling in Evanston when her children were young and later moving to Wilmette. She graduated from high school at the age of fifteen, college at the age of eighteen, and medical school at age of twenty-two. She was one of seven women in a class of 175 at the University of Illinois Medical School. She practiced internal medicine and later allergy and immunology for almost forty years, sharing an office with her husband Girard, who was also a physician. She also was on the clinical faculty of Northwestern University School of Medicine, and was also the president of the Illinois Society of Allergy and Immunology for a number of years. Alice retired in nineteen eighty-six, and she and her husband traveled the world for many years. She loved adventure and learning. She was a founding member of the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Northwestern University, and remained a very active member until a year before her death. She was also an accomplished seamstress, gardener and swimmer. Alice is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Anne Solar; as well as daughters, Amy Mills and Pamela Forman and son-in-law, Benson Forman. She also leaves behind five beloved grandchildren: Jesse, Joshua and Aaron Smith, and Noah and Daniel Forman.
