To all of the Mangans,
Sorry I could not make the wake but I wanted to let you know that my thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Your mom was very special. She was kind to everyone and I will never forget her. I hope all the wonderful memories you have of her keep her alive forever in all of your hearts. Remember, you have someone special looking over your shoulders at all times.

Hi Ya! I'm sure you all know that was Ma's greeting. God knew how special Ma would be to us that she was born Alice Eleanor Special. Alice would have a lot of “special” names throughout the years. Alice was her given name. Papa George affectionately gave her the name LuLu or Lu. Ma was the name we, her grandchildren, gave her. Papa and her dear friends and family called her Lu. When Papa was asked, “Dad, why do you call Mommy LuLu?” He replied, “Because she's LuLu.” (gesture with fingers) We came to understand what he meant. Lu could really screw up a name or a saying. It took many years for Lu to get that it's Bossard not Bizarre, and Caponera not Caponero. Her sayings are unforgettable, sayings like “I can hear, George, I'm not blind.” That'll learn ya.” And one of our favorites, “Who's barking?” Our guess would have been the dog, but raising 10 kids in an apartment could make you a little LuLu and it probably was hard to tell who actually was barking.
Lu had a lot of fun. She knew how to live life. She enjoyed going out with Papa to their numerous parties. Many of which were held at 4603 S. Union around the kitchen table singing songs like, “Heart of My Heart” and “Chatanooga Choo-Choo.” When her kids asked, “Where are you going?” She replied, “Crazy, wanna come?” She enjoyed having a cup of coffee with her brothers, Uncle Philly on Saturday mornings, Uncle Johnny on Sundays, and Uncle Ed any day of the week, spending time in Wisconsin with her sister, Aunt RoseMary, and sitting around her kitchen table with her friends having a beer and singing their songs. She enjoyed walking with her buddy, Marge, whether it was to 35th or their daily walks to Fairplay. These were special times for her and she cherished them.
Mommy had more special lines for her kids when she wanted us out of the house, whether it was getting us off to school or telling us to go out and play. “If you're that sick, they'll call me.” “The air will do you good.” “Go out and play on the Dan Ryan.” “Don't come cryin' unless your arm's hanging off or you're bleeding.” Mommy was a tough lady. She raised us to be tough, too.
Though Ma was the name her grandchildren gave her, she became everyone's “Ma”. All of our friends called her “Ma.” She was special that way. Now Ma was funny too! She had quite a few hilarious sayings for us, too. “Go outside and blow the stink off ya.” And our favorite, PITA (pain in the a…). She said that one so often, Timmy thought that was his name. The story goes that Ma was babysitting for the Bossard's. She was talking on the phone with someone, and Ma said, “I don't know where that pain the a.. is!” Timmy yelled from the front room, I'm out here, Ma.” Although she called us PITA, attending our extra-curricular activities was special to her. She never missed a special occasion for us.
We would like you to honor Alice by taking a walk, having a beer and singing a song (off key) with family and friends. That was special to her. Well, Alice, LuLu, Lu, Mom, Mommy, Aunt Alice, Auntie Alice, Grandma, Grammie, Ma, you were SPECIAL to us!
