Zoraida Ramunida Valdes-Holmes was born in Havana, Cuba, on January 23, 1924, and peacefully transitioned to be with her Lord on May 12, 2025.

In 1950, she migrated to Chicago to pursue her dream of a medical career, beginning an internship in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Providence Hospital.

After completing her residency in Pathology at the University of Illinois in 1967, Dr. Valdes-Holmes served as a staff pathologist at the VA Medical Center - West Side for 35 years. During her tenure, she also inspired countless future healthcare professionals as the site director for the Chicago Health & Medical Careers Program (C.H.A.M.P.S.).

Following her retirement from medicine, Dr. Valdes-Holmes embraced her lifelong passion for the arts. She became an accomplished painter and sculptor, with her works featured in galleries and exhibitions across Chicago. Each February, her art was proudly showcased at the Museum of Science and Industry in celebration of Black History Month.

Zoraida was married to the late Charles B. Holmes O.D. (1922-2010), a beloved optometrist and mentor in Chicago. Their enduring partnership was marked by shared devotion to service, family, and community. Together, they raised two sons, Charles B. Holmes III M.D. and Baxter Holmes, R.N.

She is lovingly remembered by her sons, her daughters-in-law, Mamie Holmes and Timbolin Holmes; and by her cherished grandchildren, Charles Holmes IV, Tyler Holmes, and Brianna Holmes. Her wisdom, creativity, and grace will continue to live on through them and through the countless lives she touched.

Valdes-Holmes M.D. will be remembered for her intellect, compassion, artistry, and unwavering commitment to uplifting others. Her life bridged cultures and generations, leaving a legacy of healing, beauty, and love.
