William Staples Obituary

Staples, William L. February 6, 2012 at home, after a valorous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Marjorie "Margie" Staples nee Kimmel, his devoted Lakeland Terrier, "Heather", and a family of friends who span several continents. Bill was born March 23 in Kansas City, Missouri. He received his BA degree from Brown University and taught English at Deerfield Academy, Deerfield, MA. He earned an MBA from the Wharton School of Business in 1965 and immediately joined the Continental Bank in Chicago, IL. Also during this time, he was a Senior Lecturer at the School of Banking in Madison, Wisconsin. Throughout his life he was a mentor and coach to many. His career with Continental spanned almost three decades. He was transferred to New York City in the late 70's and by 1988 Bill was Continental's Chief Credit Officer and Chairman of Credit Policy. He held these positions until 1994 when Continental merged with Bank of America. Bill became Executive Vice President of Bank of America until his retirement in September, 1995. Bill designed and implemented worldwide equity and portfolio management policies that are still utilized in the banking industry today. Since 1995, Bill has been President of Staples Financial Chicago, LLC which performed financial advisory work, expert witness testimony, and privileged consulting with both public and private investments. Bill was a Director of Astronautics Corporation of America, a large privately held aerospace defense company, headquartered in Milwaukee. Also, he was a member of the Board of Directors of Imperial Home Decor and a Director of the American Association of Investors (AAII), a major force in investor education. Additionally, Bill served as a Director of Case Capital Receivables, Inc. In both his professional career and his vast philanthropic pursuits, Bill's voice was clear and compelling when he immersed himself in his beloved Chicago based organizations. His demeanor was once described as that of a "man on a mission" and "a smile that would easily remind you of that favorite friend or uncle whom everyone loves and admires." Bill engaged in this mission for three decades devoting vast amounts of time to organizations such as the Near North Preservation Coalition, the Green Lake Conservancy Foundation, the 1540 Lake Shore Drive Co-Op, Columbia College's Museum of Contemporary Photography, and the Gold Coast Neighbors Association. These organizations and their diversity reflected his passions and commitment. Bill enjoyed the camaraderie of many friends. He loved to reminisce that 40 years ago he and a small group of friends began annual fishing trips to Minnesota and Florida which continued until recently. Bill loved the City of Chicago and his neighborhood. Their summer home in Green Lake, WI was a quiet retreat from the city. He and Margie enjoyed weekends there with their Lakeland Terriers, boating, and the intellectually challenging entertainment of Par Puzzles. A celebration of Bill's life will take place on Friday, February 24th at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Chrysostom's Episcopal Church, 1424 North Dearborn Parkway, Chicago, IL 60610. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made in his memory to the Museum of Contemporary Art's Family Educational Initiative, 220 East Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611. Info: www.donnellanfuneral.com or 847-675-1990

I am so very sorry to just read this news. While I did not know Bill that well, he was always direct, to the point and straightforward - refreshing. He was also a fellow Wharton grad and willing to be of assistance to me when I was in job search. I am very saddened by this news - he was a class act and will be missed. My most sincere condolences to his family.

Having worked at the Graduate School of Banking for over 36 years, I remember Bill well. It's so true that his smile would "easily remind you of that favorite friend...". I was happy to know him and saddened that he has passed. May the memories help your grief to be a little more bearable. Ann - Graduate School of Banking

I have been blessed to have Bill as an Uncle. He was a rock we could count on in our mixed up world. He had a smile to re-assure, a confidence in us that made us feel we could do anything. I love you Uncle!

Words cannot fully express all that Bill meant to Ed... abiding friend, confidante, fishing buddy, fellow lover of G & G's are just some of the ways in which they shared a brotherly relationship. I treasured Bill because he warmly welcomed me into his and Margie's world and made me feel that I belonged. Thank you, Bill and Margie. Peace. Pam and Ed Baran

I first met Bill in 1968 in a Continental Bank job interview and then had varying contact with him in varying capacities for over 35+ years. What was constant was his unflappable pursuit of excellence, his gentlemanly ways, and his steady patient teaching and ultimately his steady and growing leadership. I'm sure he had a measurable similar impact on all. He will be missed, but his many favorable interactions serve as a continuing positive force.

I was lucky enough to work for Bill not once but twice at Continental Bank..I will never forget his motto...he didn't like surprises, and he wanted to know how bad things were because he would be upset if he was caught off-guard. I also will never forget how good I got at sending packages to Green Lake for his approval every weekend when we were working on a project. God Bless you Bill, and thanks for what you taught us all.

Bill was an amazing man who was so generous to all of us lucky enough to know him. He was dedicated to his lovely wife, Margie, and to their many friends and loved ones in a way that few people are lucky enough to experience. We will miss this true gentleman in our lives and we love you Margie. May you rest in peace knowing how important you were to so many people.

Bill was a friend and a mentor to me. His friendship meant so very much to both Larry and me. We can never forget the wonderful times spent with both Bill and Margie nor his unique sense of humor and smile. I am reminded of the great educator Horace Mann's words "unless you have done something for humanity, you should be ashamed to die".......in Bill's case he fulfilled this philosophy with a plethora of deeds left over. Rest in peace dear dear friend and thank you.
