William McDermott Obituary

McDermott, Col. William John (Ret.) Age 73, beloved husband of Dianne (nee Freeman) for nearly 50 years; loving Dad of Brian (Tracey), Sean, and Kelly (Todd) Hassenfelt; "Grandpa Loud Guy" to Ryan, Connor, Caitlin, Emily, Kaley, Alex, and Jake; dear brother of Dennis (Chris) and Kathy (Ted) Beth; fond uncle and beloved by "cousins by the dozens." Bill was a proud U.S. Army veteran having served in Vietnam with the Blackhorse Regiment and a total of 32 years on active and reserve duty. He retired as a detective sergeant with the Chicago Police Department after more than 30 years of service. Having been a golf pro early in life, Bill spent his retirement on many golf courses doing what he loved and continuing to make friends everywhere he went. Bill's humor, quick wit, and stories about his incredible life experiences will be sorely missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, 1407 W. Washington Blvd., Chicago, IL 60607. Visitation Friday, August 23, 2019, from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 6150 N. Cicero Ave., Chicago, IL 60646. Funeral Saturday, August 24, 2019, 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home for 10:00 a.m. Mass at Queen of All Saints Basilica, 6280 N. Sauganash Ave., Chicago, IL 60646. Interment private. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. Bill was one of the many great ones I worked with on the CPD may he rest in peace.

I will remember Coach McDermott - my SJS PE teacher. Always treated the girls as athletes just like the boys (we girls never got those mild head knocks with his ring). Coach McDermott was always kind to me and that is what I remember the most. Go in Peace Coach!

To the Family of Coach McDermott, so sorry to hear this...our family is also saddened to hear of his passing. The great thing about respect, once it is earned it is never forgotten. Coach taught us so much in PE at SJS--especially hard word and respect. We are all better people for knowing him. And he will not be forgotten. God bless . Sincerely, The Malone Family

Bill, I knew you both on the job and off the job. Always, enjoyed your humor and prospective. You were a great Officer/Detective/Sergeant, and always a gentleman. My thoughts and condolences to your entire family.

This is going back over 50 years ago, when Bill coached basketball and taught PE at St. Jerome's Grade School in Rogers Park. Bill was only 7 years older than me, but he was such a positive role model and someone I definitely looked up to. He was known to get your attention by turning around his school ring and giving you a light tap on the head. I can remember receiving a letter from him when he was in Vietnam. I am just one of the Mulligan Family who has fond memories of Bill. My sisters Colleen, Siobhan and Catherine (Katie) join me in extending our sincere condolences to the McDermott Family.

It was with GREAT saddness that I read of "Billy's" passing. Billy was a year ahead of me throughout St Jerome's and high school. I was a classmate of Dennis. What a great Basketball player he was and what a great guy. Having worked closely with him on Billy McDonnell run for teen club president he never once showed any aloofness in our age difference and accepted me for who I was. We hung around together during his freshman year at DePaul and as happens drifted apart during my freshman year at SIU. Then a tour in Viet Nam, adjusting back to civilian life, starting a career and a family derailed any thought or attempt at reuniting by me.
I never forgot what a nice guy and friend Bill had been to me. Your husband, father, grandfather, brother was the best of the best and I will pray for him and light candles for him in the Iglesia del Pilar and hope the Lord was as kind to him as he has been to me.

Welcome home brother, your tour/shift has ended. R.I.P.

Brother Bill,
Thank you for your service in the Army in Vietnam as well as your dedicated service 'on the job' as a fellow Sergeant.
Rest in Peace sir, may God now receive you into His kingdom for your ultimate,
"Welcome Home."
