Bill, and his brother Tom, were third cousins of mine. I just recently found out that Bill had died in 2002. After Tom died the rest of the family lost track.

It is good to read these remembrances and see what a respected teacher he was.

I took several courses in History with Fr. Hogan. What a pleasure. He took time out to give me advice at a difficult time in my life. He will be truly missed by all the people whose lives he touched. Good Bless You.

I had one of my first History classes with Fr. Hogan as a freshman at Loyola in 1996. despite his age and failing health, he never failed to convey his love of History and academia. He was a very intelligent and caring man and his presence will be missed by everyone in the History Department.

I had Fr. Hogan for my Senior History Colloquium at Loyola University in the spring of 1990. It was a seminar class and each group of 2 or 3 students had to lead the discussion but after the first 15 minutes during the student led discussion he often began lecturing for the rest of the 2.5 hour class! So when it came time for my group to present I told my fellow students that I was determined to LEAD the discussion as this was a seminar, not a lecture. Once again Fr. Bill began lecturing on a point I was making. I let him continue for a few minutes and then I STOLE back the discussion. During the class break I apologize to Fr. Bill afraid he might think I was being disrespectful. He told me, I was doing exactly what we were suppose to do. Fr. Bill taught me about the history of the period between the wars but he taught me more about how to speak up and be heard. Also I remember him always being fair to everyone, he never favored one student over another, pushing us all to speak up and succeed. It is sad he will no longer be a fixture around Crown Center but memories live forever.

I was in the Glee Club and Choir at St. Ignatius H.S. while Fr. Hogan was a Scholastic. The thing I admired most about him was that this large barrel bellied man would rise on most of our High Masses and sing Panis Angelicus is a very stron and rich tenor voice.

I know that his fellow priests will sorely miss him.

I remember Fr. Hogan as my 1st year Greek teacher (1954-55) at SICP. Like all of the Jesuits we had during the early 1950's, he was an excellent and dedicated instructor.

I was a student of Fr. Hogan in 1954-55. He taught me first year Greek at St. Ignatius High School. He was demanding and frightening. He mainly frightened us with the prospect of Fr. Dan Flaherty, who was to teach us second year Greek. I've missed them both over the years. I'll see them again.

God bless you Fr. Bill.

I took four courses with Fr. Hogan as an undergraduate history major at Loyola. He was a consummate scholar, who had an encyclopedic knowledge of European and American history always available for immediate recall. I am glad to have had the privilege to have known and worked with him.

I studied United States diplomacy with Father Hogan. His lectures were clear, and the "story" was never lost. I will never forget his narrative of the encounter of U-20 and Lusitania.

My memories of Bill center on him and his family. My earliest recollection is of his beautiful singing voice. My most vivid awareness is of the lifelong affection Bill and Tom had for one another. Finally I think of Mrs. Hogan, Mrs. Foote, and Mrs. Bracken together at the Franciscan Retirement Home.

I don't have first hand knowledge of Bill's life at Loyola U., but I sense his place in his Jesuit family. To me, Bill exemplifies their spirituality, mutual concern and apostolic committment.

Bill was a quiet blessing in my life for more than fifty years.

Fr. William Hogan was always a gentleman and scholar. He shared his knowledge and wit with all. Fr. Hogan was the complete essence of Jesuit Tradition. And, he will be missed by those of us who shared his friendship and human compassion. Both Fr. Tom and Fr. Bill will long remain within our memories.
