I knew Vic from his work as an appointed attorney in the federal courts. He was a smart, kind man who was patient with even the most difficult of people. I was very sorry to hear of his illness and passing. Please accept my condolences.

I never met Mr. Pilolla but I did have the pleasure of working with Ed for a couple of years at The Star. During that time, I always appreciated Ed for his intelligence, his tenacity and the fact that he is an all-around good guy. I also knew how close Ed was to his parents and that he looked up to them and respected them a great deal. As a parent, I know how difficult it is to be a role model for your children but Ed's parents managed to accomplish this. He always spoke highly of his dad, about how much he loved journalism and how he inspired Ed both as a child and into his manhood. When I read Mr. Pilolla's obituary, I realized that he was much more impressive than I originally thought.
A note to Ed:
I am so sorry. If I can ever help you, just let me know. I do know a thing or two about the grieving process and I know how hard it can be.
You will hear a lot of things from a lot of people in the days and weeks to come. Believe me, they all mean well. You just have to keep in mind that he really was a wonderful father (that's the impression I always had) and that he loved you very much. As you get older, you will realize how much you are like him (I think that is inevitable). For now, you should have the knowledge that he will always be with you because he helped you become the person you are today.
Best always,
Tom

Ed, My regrets on the passing of your father. He obviously led a very full and interesting life, and clearly leaves with the respect of many and his good name intact. It was a pleasure to meet him on a couple of occasions.
