Verna Johnson Obituary

Johnson, Verna Lyda "Lady V", "VJ", "Mz. Johnson" made her transition on September 19, 2016 after living a long life of 88 years. She was born on February 25, 1928 and grew up in the Ida B. Wells Housing Projects under the guidance of her mother, Orville Lyda Waller (deceased) who also produced a son, Roosevelt Lyda Jr. (deceased) She was determined that she was going to succeed in life and she did. She graduated from Roosevelt University with a Bachelor's in Music Education and a Master's in Administration at the University of Chicago. She married her college sweetheart, Rex. H. Johnson, Jr. (deceased) and later created two children, Verna Jay and Rex Henry III (deceased) . Employed at Chicago Public Schools for 41 years, she taught at Burke, Burnside, Tubman, and Tesla Schools before becoming an Assistant Principal. She continued her life supporting the NAACP, DuSable Museum AKA Sorority, the Wiemodias Social Club, Olivet Baptist/St. Mark Methodist Churches, and the Burnside Block Club where she was was president. In later years, one of her favorite pastimes was to discuss politics on WVON radio station (She planned to vote for Hilary Clinton). Her day began and ended with reciting the 23rd Psalm and shouted, "DIVINE ORDER" when she needed uplifting. Everyone who knew her was aware that she enjoyed a daily can of "BUD" for over 60 years. Verna's memories will continue to reflect on a loving daughter, Verna Jay Hooks; grandson, Jamal Marcus Hooks (Joya); three grandchildren, Alanni, Maya, and Pharoah Hooks; sister-in-law, Doris Harris; and many friends.

My sincerest condolences to the Johnson Family. My mother worked with Mrs. Johnson at Tubman School for Girl for many, many years. My mother (Vivian Estes) had nothing but the highest regard and respect for Mrs. Johnson as an administrator and instructional leader. My mother would relate school situations and incidences to me as well as some very humanitarian contributions that Mrs. Johnson did. We read with interest Mrs. Johnson's opinion which she shared with the Chicago Defender "Letters to the Editor". Mrs. Johnson was kind beyond belief and she will be missed.

My Soror Verna L. Johnson, will truly be missed by me. She had been a very active member of Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and in later years rarely missed the Theta Omega Chapter Seniors meetings. I remember that she was always concerned about getting out the vote.
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to her family during this time of bereavement.
