Vera Collins Obituary

Collins, Vera Arrington Was born February 19, 1920 in Chicago, IL. She was one of five siblings born to mother and father, John Arrington. She was raised by her paternal grandmother, Carrie Arrington. Vera was a proud wife married to Harvey D. Collins. She was a loving mother of two children, daughter Jean Johnson and son Edmund Greene, Jr. Vera co-developed the growth of Harvey Collins Enterprises working along side husband, Harvey Collins, in their food, laundromat and real estate businesses. In 1969, Vera began an enviable "daily" volunteer career at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center that lasted 35 years. In 1971 she also joined the Medical Center's Woman's Board where she served for over 30 years and had the distinction of being one of the first African Americans in the Association of Mannequins to grace the runway of the Medical Center's prestigious annual benefit fashion shows. The Medical Center formally honored her for her amazing dedication and accomplishments. Vera was an enthusiastic traveler and visited most of the world in her adult lifetime. Her travel experiences often included her heart for the underserved demonstrated by her consistent donations to orphan children in Acapulco, Mexico. Vera is survived by her son, Edmund Greene, Jr., daughter Valerie Greene Norman-Gammon, daughter-in-law, Sharon Elliott Greene and a host of loving grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

I will always remember "Aunt Vera", as I so fondly called her, as being one of the most beautiful (inside & out) and well dressed women I'd ever met in my life. I have wonderful memories of our many visits with her great friend and my then mother in-law Lillian Eaton. My condolences to Aunt Vera's family, she is now reunited with her long life friend "Lil". God Bless...
