Troy! Roach!! I ran across this site after I found this picture in some old band stuff. I played bass with Johnny, Troy, and Ralph in the Plague at the beginning. What a great man. Fun, musical. Always made me laugh. Rock on my brother!

My deepest sympathies to the Coates family. I signed Roach to his first record deal with Lungbrush. I always thought he was the best frontman to come out of Chicago. I lost my brother to a rare form of cancer at a young age, and know how difficult it is. You are truly in my thoughts during this difficult time. Rest In Peace Roach.

It's probably been about 10 years since I last saw Troy but he is impossible to forget. I worked at Rolling Stones Records and he would come in from time to time to promote Lungbrush and we'd always spend a great deal of time talking music or whatever else came to mind. He was a great guy and once I heard of his passing my heart sank. Many bands came in to promote themselves but none of them left an impression like Troy did. You will be greatly missed. My sincerest sympathies go out to his friends and family.

Oh Tina, I will always remember the day you introduced me to Troy. How blessed you are because, There can be beauty in loss, with enough distance and time.
Stars are born from the death of a sun,
with the greatest stars having the shortest lives, providing the brightest light for us to see.
May you find a star to guide you thru this difficult time. My thoughts are with you and your family of friends.

Troy "Roach" Coates
He is gone but will never be forgotten. Though his music, humor, wisdom, and just being himself.
Everytime someone would meet him he would take the time to sit and chat with them and treat them like a brother and sister. He was one of a kind and will be missed by one and all.
He is not in any more pain or suffering but at peace. He is with the metal gods now with a big smile on his face and most likely on a stage jumping around as he always did.
R.I.P. my brother!!

To my dear cousin, we never met, yet when reading the guest book, of the friends you made in life.
I can't help but feel, a great person has been lost.
I wish I could have met you cousin, have thought about it, and now it's to late in this life.
You must be sitting pretty in the heavens now, and hope the music you sing comes to my soul during my sleep.
I know one day we'll meet cousin, and with the glory of the heavens, I can hear you sing.
Bless you cousin.

Brother Roach..
Words will never describe the loss we will all feel with you gone now but you will always be with us in spirit (from the memories and through your music and videos).
Paying my respects to you today (along with old school/new school friends), we all bear witness to one another the great love we shared for you. Through the years, you have touched so many lives & meant so much to each of us in our own special way. May the good LORD see the goodness in your heart & recieve you into HIS kingdom for your good works.
"The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me besides quiet waters, He restores my soul.
HE guides me in paths of righteousness for HIS name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff; they comfort me.
You prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies, you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever".

I'm thankful for the opportunity to know Troy as long and as well as I did. I first saw him at the old Exit on wells and he was climbing all over that web thing they had over the dance floor. I had never seen a performance like that before. We became friends that day and the friendship endured until the end of his life. He was truly one of a kind. Such an influence to so many. He supported local music more than national acts. He was totally committed to music until the end. He loved the racetrack and he showed me how to play the ponies, turned me on to the chili peppers, UFO and so many countless other things. Troy was always fun and interesting to be around. Thank you Troy for coming into my life. I'll never forget you.

What a rare breed and wonderful man you were Troy. I met you in 1987 when The Plague recorded in my basement studio n Mount Prospect (Which I still may have the masters if anyone cares to take them). I never forgot how absolutely down to earth you were.
I believe you were a man who had little regrets. Rock solid in your quest to do the right thing.
Ya know, you were one of the few in Chicago music that stayed grounded and honest. You had an incredible memory for events and places which added to your ability to make feel feel counted.
Even before your death, when your name would come up, people ALWAYS had good things to say about you. It was a living testimony of your impact on people.
Rock on, brother.

To Tina and Family,
Although I met him for just a moment, I got to know him through Tina. He was crazy and nutty guy who filled her life with love, laughter and sweetness. He is with the angels watching over and seeing how many people loved him. He is at rest and living a truly lovely life. He is in a much better place than we are, right next to our Father. God bless you and your family in this moment of sorrow. Celebrate his life and all the good times you created and shared.
Look to the Lord for strength and when you feel like crying just do it. Call a friend when you need a sholder, you have alot and that includes me.
God bless you and strengthen you

In my younger years (99-02) Troy's band Lungbrush was a HUGE part of not only my life, but my group of friends, we'd always be making the trip from Aurora to Chicago to see them. Even though we weren't old enough to have beer, Troy would always take some time to talk with us and thank us for always coming to see he and the boys do what they loved. A genuine character, Roach will forever be in my mind. Rest In Peace, my friend.

I first met Troy in 1988 or so when i started working and booking local shows. He gave me a demo tape and was so confident on his band it made me take notice. His determination to play shows and give people what they paid for was important to him.He was a showman who gave 100% on the stage and off.He met with the fans before and after a gig to thank them for supporting him and the local scene. He would show up at other gigs i did to promote his band and before you knew it,they were on stage opening for touring acts. His drive was immence, very few had the fire in their eyes to keep on going. He never gave up and he was a warrior. I never heard him say a bad word about anyone, watching him work the room promoting his act hoping someday to make a name for himself. He was constantly there to support the local bands and did whatever he could to help out.His family should be proud of him for he was a true man dedicated to his music, friends and family.Although i haven't seen him in many years, his memory is fresh in my mind and always will be.I will miss you my old brother, now your in Heaven jamming with Barry Stern as well.
