Timothy Malloy Obituary

Malloy, Timothy Joseph "Tim" Age 75, of Burr Ridge, IL, formerly of Milwaukee, WI, beloved husband of 50 years to Patricia Smid Malloy, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2019, with his family by his side. Born in Hattiesburg, MS, he was the son of the late Joseph A. Malloy and Marcella Conley Malloy. Besides his wife he is survived by his two children, Chris Malloy and his wife, Flory, of Irving, Texas and his daughter, Brigid Kloostra and her husband, Kraig of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He also leaves 11 grandchildren, Alethea, JohnPaul, Hannah, Thomas, EvaMarie, Matthew and Gabriel Malloy, and Kole, Erin, Tara and Luke Kloostra. He also leaves his brother Thomas (Linda) Malloy of Cranston, RI, sister, Peggy (the late Richard) Armstrong of Lutz, FL and Kevin (Kerri) Malloy of Wethersfield, CT and many nieces and nephews. Tim grew up in Milwaukee and attended Marquette High (Class of 1962). He received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Notre Dame (class of 1966) with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Go Irish! He then earned his JD from the University of Notre Dame in 1969. Tim Malloy co-founded one of the country's leading intellectual property law firms, McAndrews, Held & Malloy, where his career flourished, and he became recognized as one of the world's finest patent attorneys. Tim served as lead counsel in numerous jury trials, bench trials, and arbitrations throughout the country. Tim's legacy will continue through the law firm that bears his name as well as the many highly successful attorneys that he trained, inspired, and mentored throughout his 50+ year career.Tim also helped shaped patent law as a result of his many leading district court and appellate cases. One highlight of his career included arguing before the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of Eli Lilly and Company in a landmark case directed to the scope of patent protection for medical devices. Throughout his career, Tim earned the respect of countless attorneys, judges, and corporate leaders. Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) magazine, which named him to the IAM 1000 World's Leading Patent Practitioners and the IAM 250 World's Leading Patent Litigators, called him "a leading light in the practice a hugely experienced and talented trial lawyer." Tim was designated a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, an honorary society comprised of less than one-half of one percent of American trial lawyers. In 2018, Tim was honored with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, one of the highest distinctions awarded by Marquis Who's Who, a comprehensive directory of biographies of prominent Americans. Tim also served on Law360's Editorial Advisory Board and on the Advisory Council for the University of Notre Dame Law School. Tim was also very active outside the legal community. Through the organization of Link Unlimited, Tim and his wife, Patti, sponsored African American high school students for the past 28 years. They mentored these students, who went on to obtain college degrees and become successful in a variety of fields such as the law, pharmaceutical science, business, real estate, and others. Recently, Tim and Patti became one of only three couples to receive the Link Mentor Merit Award. Tim was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered for his zest for life, his humor, his generosity and the wonderful stories he would share. Tim was truly one of a kind and took every opportunity to live his life to the fullest. His passion was contagious and will be carried on by those who knew him. Hi honey,
Oh my it´s going to be 6 years in September. Somehow I´ve managed to muster through. I keep traveling which I know you´d be so proud of me. But I miss you so very very much. This has been a very difficult year and I don´t know why. I´m just so lonely. Try always to fill up my days and read hundreds of books. Every time I go to singing on the way home I remember you encouraging me to continue. I´m so grateful to you for that. It´s so important and I have so many memories and friends at Choralaires. Thank you again. I´m thanking you all the time and each and every time I truly mean it. You are keeping me going. I do remember you saying set an alarm for an hour and take a quick eye closer.
Please don´t forget me. I love you so much, to the moon and back!! Thank you for being my best friend ever and my continued love and hero. . Me

Hi honey, in just a couple days it´ll be 5 years that you´ve been in heaven with all our relatives and friends who´ve joined you. I´m assuming that you´re having a wonderful time. I know I´ve been keeping you extremely busy asking for help with this and that. You are here for me every day. I can still feel you and definitely know you´ve got my back. Thank you for everything you have when you were here with me in person. And zillions of thanks for being here with me now. You are still and always will be my hero and my love. I miss you so much. I love you to the moon and back.
BTW you know this already but Erin is living in Chicago at law school here and Kole is in Dallas Texas near Chris and family. Yahoo Mountain Dew!!! As you would have said. . Me

Hi Honey, It's me and I miss you so much. It's almost your birthday and our anniversary, April 7th. You've created such a huge hole in my heart. I'm not mad, just very sad and lonely. I can hear you everyday when I ask for your help. You are always here, I can feel your arms around me. Your smile, your wonderful voice, your huge enthusiasm, positive attitude and encouragement are giving me the ability to continue. Brigid and Chris somehow got all of us through your services with love and devotion to you. You must be so proud of them and of our 11 grandchildren who were your pallbearers. Everyone came and everyone continues to offer help and love. We have so many wonderful friends, neighbors and relatives. Thank heaven. I promise not to lose your ring, it hangs around my neck as a constant reminder of our love for each other. When the tombstone is delivered, you'll like it (I'm on it too) :), but that's not why. It is pearl/emerald, your gifts to me. Please keep helping me. Thank you for over 50 years of happiness and love. I love you so very much. You always will be my rock, my support, my hero, my true love. me.

I have to add, he taught me to windsurf and drive a mower tractor while getting ready for the traditional turkey bowl, a football game that was played at his house for many a year. You have touched me in so many ways I can not write them all down. You and your family are loved and you will be greatly missed. But thought of often.
Your loving niece,
Kimberly (Kimmie) Malloy-DeCellio

Tim always made me feel welcome here at the firm and helped to foster a positive energy that runs through McAndrews, Held & Malloy. I have fond memories of an email I received from him a couple of years ago in which he wrote (regarding an event I had organised), "I cannot go but I really appreciate what you do for the firm. Your talents and energy seem boundless." Not only did I appreciate him taking the time to reach out to me even though he could not come along, but I thought the same thing about his talents and energy. Tim will be missed.

Farewell to a wonderful colleague and friend of over 40 years. Tim was always positive and available to discuss concerns of every member of the law firm. My one regret is that we never had the opportunity to play tennis together. Condolences to Patti and the rest of the family.

Having had three brothers with prostate cancer and a prostatectomy myself I know how devastating this disease is. I offer the following vignettes to provide solace to you and not to promote sorrow. As you know Tim and I met the first day of freshman year as we lived directly across from one another in Stanford Hall at ND. To this day when I'm vexed, I use the
expletive he taught me "ubi, ad omnia, est sub ubi".. We remained friends and in Law School we teamed up to prosecute Lizzie Borden. I visited you a few times over the years in Burr Ridge, where I played Tennis against Tim. Unfortunately my guile and deceit were no match for his speed, agility and hand-eye coordination. After all he had won the Notre Dame handball round robin as a student. I had known Tim would be a successful attorney since, in his first year of Law School, he had arbitrated a game of Twister by declaring the match null and void due to the ambiguity of the instruction "cheek to cheek"
I know that Tim is now mesmerized by the the Beatific vision but it is not without my envy that he also knows whether or not Lizzie Borden was guilty. With a hole in my heart I pray for you and your family's loss.

As a law school classmate I will always remember Tim as being friendly and helpful, extremely smart but never boastful, in short a great classmate. Heaven's Chapter of the Notre Dame Club just received a wonderful new member. Go Irish indeed. Condolences to the entire Malloy family. Joe McNeil

Tim was a great friend and handball partner at Notre Dame, and we had fun comparing notes or thoughts from time to time in our "practicing law" years. He was an unfailingly positive guy who enriched us all. Condolences and all best to Patti and the family.

September 5, 2019

My deepest condolences to Patti and Tim's family on their loss. I have fond memories of the time I spent with Tim during our three years at the Notre Dame Law School and know that he will be missed by all who had the pleasure to know him. May it help to know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of Tim's NDLS Class of 1969 classmates. Gary Stoff, St. Louis, MO

As next door neighbors in the early 70's in Lagrange, we remember Tim, just starting out in his illustrious career. His legacy is no surprise to us! A caring, compassionate, energetic, and intellectually gifted person, he was a role model for us. We will always remember with a smile, our young adult (and young parent) journeys. [email protected]
