Thomas Stanfield Obituary

Thomas Stanfield, 89, of Savannah, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at Memorial Health University Medical Center after a short illness. The Louisville, Illinois native was a graduate of Cumberland College and attended Washington and Lee University. He earned bachelors and masters degrees in history from the University of Illinois in 1939 and 1940. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marine during and after World War II. He was a retired seaman, having worked as an officer aboard the S.S. United States for 15 years. He was the son of the late John and Addie Stanfield and was the widower of Jule Rossiter Stanfield. Survivors: sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Groover; nephews, Dr. Frank P. Rossiter, Patrick C. Rossiter, Dr. Jack W. Groover, Thomas A. Groover, and Frank R. Groover, all of Savannah, Richard J. Rossiter of Orlando, FL, and Joseph B. Rossiter of Miami, FL; nieces, Julianne Rossiter and Sue Rossiter Homans, both of Savannah. Visitation: 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors Hodgson Chapel. Rosary Service: 7: 00 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home. Graveside service: 1:00 p.m. Friday at Catholic Cemetery. His nephews will serve as pallbearers. Remembrances: Cathedral Heritage Fund and the Jule Rossiter Stanfield Scholarship at Armstrong Atlantic State University.
