Lynn Mitchell and Rev. Anderson Tyler will officiate the service. Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 26th from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Downs Funeral Home, 4608 Elysian Fields Road, Marshall. Thomas Mitchell was born on July 18, 1942, in Shreveport, La., to Ralph Mitchell and Modene Davis Mitchell. In 1967, Thomas married Frances Cope Mitchell in Bossier City, La. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Marshall. Thomas was very involved and a co-founding member of Northwest Louisiana Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Mr. Mitchell played football and baseball at Fair Park High School and Northwestern State University. He started his career as a high school football coach in Zachary, La. After coaching, Thomas entered the business world in real estate, construction, oil and gas. Mr. Mitchell was currently a partner in Reunion Energy. Thomas also spent a number of years as a Christian motivational speaker. He was an encourager and loved people. One of his recent endeavors that brought him a great deal of joy, was producing and hosting the Marshall Maverick and Calvary Baptist Football Shows. He also produced the The Old Coach Radio show for several years. He had a love for writing and was the author of several books. Thomas also served on the athletic board at Northwestern State University. He is survived by his wife, Frances Cope Mitchell; one son and daughter-in-law, Ty and Lisa Mitchell; one daughter and son-in-law, Misty and Tim Lester; two grandchildren, Quade Kelly and Zachary Mitchell Lester, all of Marshall; one brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Val Mitchell of Shreveport, La.; and his niece and nephews. I'm so sorry to hear of Thomas' passing. Of the 535 graduates in our senior class, Thomas stick's out because he was a "good guy". Even though I only saw him once or twice since we graduated he has always been in my memories. I know that God has a special place for him above.

To the family of Thomas R. Mitchell I am so sorry for the lost of your dear loved one. It's comforting to know that God cares for all of us and losing a loved one is something we cannot get use to. The Bible gives us hope that one day we can see our dear loved one again. On behalf of all mankind Jesus surrender his soul for many. John 15:13 says “No one has love greater than this, that someone should surrender his soul on behalf of his friends.” Truly I am sorry to hear of the loss of your dear loved one and I hope these few words will bring you comfort and hope.

From the Mother of a son who was coached by a dedicated coach at North Caddo High School many, many years ago. Just starting out Big Coach Mitchell , assisted by Little Coach Mitchell, was a blessing to the North Caddo Football Team. Boys were trained, disciplined and loved by their coaches, What a God's Blessing. Also, Mrs. Mitchell you were so young, beautiful and full of life. Thanks to both of you for a big part in our son, Q's, life. Always admiration, love and prayers to your family, God Bless, Mrs. F.Q. Hood, Sr. Mooringsport, La.

Frances and Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sorrow. May your memories bring you comfort. I only had the pleasure of knowing the "Old Coach" for a short time, as I helped to plan the DACCO Managers' meeting for 2007. I enjoyed hearing the Coach speak and motivate our team! I am so glad the Coach was a part of my life!

Frances, Ty and Misty -

I was so sorry to hear about Coach Mitchell. Sorry for us, but as he himself taught me, rejoicing as he is resting with his Savior, Jesus Christ. I will never forget those High School Bible Studies, College and Career and those FCA retreats in Minden. We had wonderful times of fun and fellowship. Ty and Misty I will tell you from the experience of losing my own dad only the Lord will help make the burden of your loss "lighter" and the memories "sweeter" as the days and week pass by. I am praying for God to uplift you and your family tomorrow and in the days and week to come. Coach Mitchell was always such an encourager and his smile will be missed.

To the Mitchell Family:
Over the last few years I go to know "The Old Coach" quite well. He brought alot of laughs to us at my parents home, my office, football games and around our hunting camp/horse farm. He came around when my father was down and out from surgery and lifted all of our spirits.
He was a great and generous man who will be missed by all. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

There are not enough words to describe my memories of Thomas. The first would be when I was pregnant with Mandy and he teased me about letting Rawford run my horse for me. He asked to lease my horse for Ty cause he wanted Ty to learn barrelracing. Instead he leased a palimino and now look at Ty. He did his job well that Thomas. We have laughed with each other and hugged each other each time we met for the past 25 years. I loved Thomas and his family and will miss him a lot but will never forget him.

Judy and I are sorry to hear of your loss. I remember Thomas from about 10 years old at Kelly Memorial Baptist Church. I knew he was a special person even at that young age. Even though I haven't seen Thomas since high school I have known of his love of the Lord through some of his writings. It is so hard to lose a friend but it is a comfort to know we will all be together again. You and your family will be in our prayers. God bless, Bobby & Judy Graham
