I am so sorry to have heard about Coach Mitchell. He had a reputation among coaches everywhere, in the Catholic League and well beyond, as an individual of impeccable character, displayed when he wasn't even aware people were taking note. A genuine man who espoused the values of Brother Rice, Viriliter in Christo Jesu. I had the honor of being a student at Brother Rice when he was teaching and coaching there, and of working with Marianne many years later. I am proud to have known them both, and I am sorry that I just heard of this Tom's passing today.

To the family of Tom Mitchell. I just heard this morning that Tom has gone home to God. I was sorry that I missed his wake and funeral. Tom's devotion to Our Lady of Mt Carmel, wearing her scapular, was always an inspiration to me. Our Carmelite motto, taken from Elijah the prophet, is "With zeal I will be zealous for the Lord God of hosts." Tom was filled with Zeal for his family and for our world. I always admired him. He reminded me of a quote from St Francis DeSales - THERE IS NOTHING SO STRONG AS GENTLENESS AND NOTHING SO GENTLE AS REAL STRENGTH. MAY TOM REST IN PEACE AND MAY THE lORD HIM GENTLY IN THE PALM OF HIS LOVING HAND....

Our sympathy to the Mitchell family from the O'Boye's formerly of St. Joachim's. Margaret, Patrick, Jim and Kevin grew up with many of the Mitchell's. Remember Tom from his great football days at Tuley Park and Mt. Carmel H.S. And later as the head football coach at Brother Rice. And finally working for the Chicago Park Dist. we would bump into him from time to time. A great gentleman!!!
God rest his soul.

Coach Tom Mitchell was a great coach, educator, leader of young men and a role model. The world needs more people like him. He was tough, yet compassionate and I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Coach, You were more to many than you may have realized. Be it a friend, mentor, listener, counselor, teacher, father like figure, co worker, or guidance, you always knew what we needed inside, even before we ourselves knew what we were looking for. We love you, will miss you, and carry you in our hearts forever! Thanks Coach.

To the Mitchell family,
Thank you for sharing Tom with all the other people whose lives he touched and made better. Everyone who knew him learned valuable life lessons through his words and example. His life will go on in the actions of those he mentored. We're glad he was part of our life and know that our son is a better human being because he was lucky enough to have been coached by Tom. Sorry we are not home to pay our respects in person but know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers. Coach was THE BEST.

To the Mitchell family - I am very sorry to hear about your loss. Coach had so many great attributes but the one I remember most was the way he could bring you up with an encouraging word if he knew you were feeling down about something or just having a tough day. This showed a great compassion and kindness toward others and so many of us were truly privileged to have had someone like Coach as our teacher. May God continue to bless and watch over your family.

As the sign in front of Brother Rice states: "We remember the Life of Coach Tom Mitchell". A life well lived as a Husband, Dad, Coach & Friend to the many that crossed his path. He possessed the Moral Character & Christian Values that are so sorely missing in today's secular world. I had Coach Mitchell for Bus. Law in the sixties and thru the yrs would run into him jogging @ Rice or in a local restaurant. He would remember you whether you played football or were just one of his students. My condolences to his wife & family and may Our Good Lord welcome him into His Eternal Kingdom. Saddened by his passing but gladdened by his legacy....Mike Vladovic, Class of '66

I was quite distressed to not have hear of Tom's passing until yesterday. Having known Tom from our days attending St. Joachim grammar school, I will tell all that he was a person of unrivaled integrity, dogged determination and exemplary family values- all of which were resultant from great parents and older siblings. I know this from my contacts with Jack and Dick over the years.
Tom made a great contribution to this world in his mentoring of the students he came into contact with during his coaching tenure at Brother Rice - have had so many alumni speak his praises.
Well done Tom!

Our thoughts & prayers are with the Mitchell Family. The kids in the City Sport Programs will be less fortunate now that Tom Mitchell is not@their side organizing & looking out for them. No one had a bigger heart when it came to kids. He was loved and will be missed by all, young & old! God Bless you,Tommy. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel pray for us!

My deepest sympathy to the Mitchell family. Coach Mitchell was one of my favorite teachers and coaches at Br. Rice. May he rest in peace knowing he left his positive mark on so many of us.
