McCarthy, Thomas J. aka "Tom" and "Smiling Tom", age 65 of Chicago, former resident of Riverside, Il., passed away August 27, 2003. Thomas attended St. Mel's Elementary School, Riverside-Brookfield High School and graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a degree in Industrial Design. After working for several years in the field at Motorola, Inc., he became Graphic Coordinator at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, where he flourished, for the past 32 years. Thomas served in the United States Army in Germany and was a member of the American Legion's first post in Paris. Thomas loved to travel and explore; enjoyed reading, cooking and listening to all kinds of music. He was a devotee of fine art and history. Thomas loved life and was full of life; a friend to all whose lives he touched. He will be well remembered for his artistic talents, his wit, his smile and his charming personality. He was the loving father of Magan (Brian Manning) and Seania (Daniel Lampert); dear grandfather of Aedan, Rowan, Liam and Cale and beloved by Janet J. Kolar. A funeral mass for Thomas J. McCarthy will be held at 1 p,.m. on Friday, September 19, 2003, at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Central Alcoholics Service Organization, 200 N. Tom was the best work friend one could ever have. We worked (and played) together at the District for decades. I'm sorry to hear of his passing and that we hadn't been as close since I retired. My best wishes and condolences to his daughters and Jan.
