Tom, I will never forget the times at Gross. We had alot of fun with all the gang there. I remember how you road me on your bike handle bars while you were throwing firecrackers. There are no friends like the old friends at Gross. We will all miss and remember you Theresa DeStefano

Our brother Tom was only 14 when our father died, by the time he was 18 our mother had also died and he was the father of a beautiful daughter (Pam). Thank God mom met her before her death. Tom's early life was a struggle but having that tuff Irish work ethic that my father had,he worked hard for his family and became the man he was before his death. We beleive that Tom was just like our father and made sure his family came first. There isn't a day that passes that we don't think about our mother and father. From the bottom of our hearts Mom, Dad and our little brother Tommy we will always love you and never stop thinking about you for the rest of our days on earth. Love Always, Michael, Paul and Steven Lally

Tommy was a one of a kind guy. Always had a kind word and never judgemental. He is a part of my life that I will miss and remember with fond memories always. My deepest sympathies go to his family and close friends at this time. I feel priviledged just to have known him and proud to call him a friend and relative.

Tom was a very special friend to both of us. He was proud of his daughters and his great relationship with them and his grandkids. He was also proud of his Irish heritage, his accomplishments in life, and his friendships. We shared a lot of laughter and some tears. He was ALWAYS there for us and we were proud to call him a friend. We will miss the sound of his Harley pulling into our driveway, for a washing and polish. We will miss the sound of his voice, the sound of his laugh and only some of his politics. :) Most of all we will really miss HIM.

The Officers and Members of United Transportation Union Local 577 extend our sympathy and sincere condolences to Tom's family at this difficult time.
I have worked with Tom since the days when he was Car Foreman at Wolf Road at Proviso...through the years when he was the Foreman on the Wrecker...through the years he was simply the BEST Yardmaster the Tower Yard had EVER had (he sent us home hours early IF we got our trains made up !)...and right up to his becoming the Senior Manager of Train Operations.
Unlike some who carry fat titles and grow matching egos, Tom remained one of us - always reasonable, willing to negotiate in situations where other 'bosses' might take advantage of rank.
He would boast so much of being Irish that I just had to take him down a notch by suggesting that I had heard that the Lally Clan was actually a band of Scots. It was worth it just to see the colour red his neck turned.
Truth be told - his face was a veritable map of Ireland, and his laughter and manner marked him as a Son of Erin. His temper, sometimes, as well.
Tom loved to travel and had just last year gone to France. Upon his return, some of his best buds were sporting French berets he brought back. I, of course, being a railroader, asked him where was MINE ? In typical fashion, without blinking an eye, he said, "I travel with a suitcase - not a steamer trunk !"
Those guys are, of course, wearing those berets today.
The rest of us at Proviso are exchanging stories we have about Tom, laughing heartily, and remembering.
"I would be true, for there are those who trust me.
I would be pure, for there are those that care.
I would be strong, for there is much to suffer.
I would be brave, for there is much to dare.
I would be friend of all, the foe, the friendless.
I would be giving and forget the gift.
I would be humble for I know my weakness.
I would look up, love, laugh, and live."

Be Still
Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.
Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.
If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Someone put this poem on my sister-in-laws guestbook & I read it quite often. I thought loved ones would find some peace in it as I do.
Thinking of you all during this difficult time!
To My Dearest Family
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say. But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above. Here, there's no more tears of sadness; Here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight. Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through. God picked me up and hugged me and He said "I welcome you.
It's good to have you back again, you were missed while you were gone. As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly, you're part of my plan. There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do. And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night the day's chores put to flight; God and I are closest to you... in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years. Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry: it does relieve the pain. Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned. If I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er, I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb; But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too; That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain; Then you can say to God at night...."My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented...that my life was worthwhile. Knowing as I passed along the way I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low, Just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street and you've got me on your mind; I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go...from that body to be free, Remember you're not going....you're coming here to me.
