Thomas Fielding Obituary

Fielding, Thomas M. 49, devoted son and brother, loving husband and father, and cherished friend, passed away on September 22, 2003. Tom was born February 18, 1954, in Philadelphia, PA and graduated from Marquette University. Following graduation, Tom entered the tile and building supply industry, his work as a sales manager brought him and his family to Atlanta. In 1987, operating initially out of his basement, Tom and his business partner, Gerald King, began their own ceramic tile business, Ceramic Technics, Ltd., Alpharetta, Georgia, and built it into a highly successful company, selling tile and stone in Georgia, Florida and the Southeast United States. Tom was loved and respected by his friends as the best example of a caring husband and father, and of what a good man should be. He led a vibrant life, sharing many good times, so it was perhaps fitting that he passed away while playing league basketball, a game he loved to follow at all levels and to play. Tom was very close to his entire family and is survived by his wife of 26 years, Joni Fielding, and his children, Chris, Nikki and Kevin Fielding. He is additionally survived by his mother, Mrs. Margaret Fielding and sister, Geri Anne Fielding of Elgin, IL; brothers, John Fielding of North Canton, Ohio, and David Fielding of West Palm Beach, Florida, and their families and will be deeply missed by many. The family will receive friends at the wake to be held Thursday, September 25, 2003, 6 to 9 p.m., at the Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Rd., Roswell, GA. The funeral will be held on Friday, September 26, 2003 at 10:30 a.m., at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 535 Rucker Rd., Alpharetta, GA.

I only met Tom a couple of times through Dave and Jennifer Fielding. It was very obvious to me, what kind of impact he had on Dave's life and I'm sure many others. I don't think I've ever seen anyone brighten or be as excited, the way Dave would if he talked about or was with his brother. I am truly sorry for the Fielding's loss.

To the Fielding Family:

Tom and I met when we were 7 years old. My family moved to Sleepy Hollow, Illinois, several doors down from the Fielding family. We stayed friends all through high school. Unfortunately, we lost contact during our college years, but reconnected in 1980. (Joni, you probably don't remember but I was one of your first visitors in Atlanta.) Since 1980, Tom called me every year on my birthday. He never forgot...Never. Since I was a few weeks older than him he enjoyed making fun of my age, especially at milestones. I'll bet he had a special call planned for our 50th next year. The effort that he placed staying in contact with me I took for granted. I regret that. I was on a trip and couldn't make it to Atlanta for the funeral. When I got home I drove out to Sleepy Hollow, parked my car and walked through the yards that Tom and I would meet in when we were kids. So many memories came flooding back. One was a Sunday night in Feb. of 1964 when Tom yelled across the yards "Sylvester, don't forget to watch the Beatles tonight on Ed Sullivan" I said "who are the Beatles?" I will miss him very much. I apologize this was so long. My deepest sympathies to all the Fielding family.

I knew Tom from noontime basketball and would play with him in the evening leagues. Every few months I would bring my young son along and Tom would always take the time to talk with him and give him pointers on how to shoot baskets. He will be deeply missed.

To Joni and Family,

I cannot adequately express how truly saddened I am for your loss.

I worked for Tom for several years many years ago at Buchtal, it was my first job out of college. Tom had a great influence on me and my future success. Few days go by that I don't find myself reminded of Tom when I hear myself saying something to one of our employees that I learned from him.

It was an honor and a pleasure to have have known Tom.

Our prayers are with you,

I went to school with Tom from first grade until the day we graduated from High School. He was always a great friend to everyone. He never had anything bad to say about anyone. He was the kind of friend that you remember all your life. And that will never change.

Please accept my deepest sympathy. he will truly be missed by all that knew him

To the Fielding family and friends: I am so sorry for your loss. By all accounts, Tom was a wonderful man. I did not know Tom, but did play in the church league basketball game where he passed away. Though it may be but small consolation, I'd like to share a few things with you: first, players and bystanders did all they could to save Tom before paramedics arrived, and as it happened, I don't believe he suffered. Second, I see that you mentioned that it was fitting that he passed away doing something he loved to do - I can confirm that, and everyone who was there would tell you that he was the best player on the court that evening.
