Tessie Benjamin Obituary

Benjamin, Tessie Tessie Cozie Edwards Benjamin of Chicago passed away on February 21st. She was 88. A graduate of Waukegan Township High School she received her BS from George Williams College and Masters of Arts from Roosevelt University. She was a member of the AKA Sorority. Tessie's career included work at Abraham Lincoln Center, the juvenile court of Cook County, and a teacher/ counselor at Calumet High School. She was a life long mentor of the young men and women that were assigned to her and numerous others that just stopped in for help. She retired from teaching but never retired from counseling; helping her neighbors, family, friends and even strangers. She was a mother, wife, teacher, mentor and humanitarian. Tessie is survived by her sons; Georges and Michael; two granddaughters Stephanie and Kali; her brother Charles Edwards, and sister Helen Watkins; her daughter in-law Yvette Benjamin; many family members and hundreds of former students. Services will be held at A.A. Rayner & Sons, 318 East 71st street on Wednesday, February 27, Viewing 10 a.m. and Services at 11 a.m. For verification of death - A.A. Rayner & Sons (773) 846-6133.
