Stjepan Bobek Obituary

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Stjepan Bobek, a record-setting striker for Yugoslavia and Partizan Belgrade, has died. He was 86.

Belgrade emergency clinic doctors did not immediately specify the cause of Bobek's death early Sunday.

The Croatia-born Bobek scored 403 goals in 468 matches between 1945-58 for Partizan Belgrade, a club record. In 1947, he scored a record nine goals in a Yugoslav league game.

He also scored 38 goals in 63 matches for the Yugoslavia national team. He won two Olympic silver medals, in London in 1948 and Helsinki in 1954.

After his playing career ended, Bobek coached in Poland, Tunisia, Macedonia and Greece.

He remained in the Serbian capital Belgrade after the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

To the family: May the comfort from family and friends strengthen you during this difficult time, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

Neka mu je laka crna zemlja i Bog mu dao u raju naselje. Great sports figure and role model. Man who could transcend "cultural differences" and see all people as a part of one God's family.

To the family of Stjean Bobek: My deepest sympathy for your loss. No words can take the place of your loved one but I hope that the knowledge that you are not alone in your grief helps you to bear up.
I had an honor to see Bobek in the last 5-6 years to be toghether with his LEGEND at the gatherings of old Macva football players and "Sapcani" meetings ever Saturday at different restaurants in Beograde when ever I was visitng. He was real gentlemen sportsman, had a strong character of a very dissent man.
Memory eternal and a place in Heaven
!!! Gospod da mu prosti i neka mu je laka crna zemja
May his memory be eternal!

Stjepan was a legend, a scoring machine. As popular as Babe Ruth was in the US in his time. May the Lord embrace Mr Bobek in His arms and give his family true peace.
